Toyota power steering conversion

I'm hoping someone can help me here. I did the Toyota power steering conversion and got all the parts on my own. I bought a steering box, made my own bracket and bought a new GM power steering pump. My problem is my truck steers to easy, almost by itself. So I bought a kit to reduce the pressure in the pump down to 1000 PSI. I made no difference. I can reduce it down to 700 PSI but not sure if that's my problem. Thank you for any help.

Try a steering stabilizer , acts like a shock.

That's a good idea if nothing else works. I'm just afraid of blowing a seal in the box if its got that much pressure to steer itself.

Yep, I'd change to a Ford pump rather than trying to restrict it down further.

Paul: My understanding of how these units work is that they have an adjustable pressure relief, and whenever it exceeds the pressure you have it set to, it simply bypasses, and bleeds the excess back to the reservoir (hmmm....sounds like the oil pump in your engine, except for the external adjustment:)

Don't know, just going by what some of the fabricators say. Personally, I just stick with my Ford pumps, just in case my horn doesn't work while turning! In reality, I don't want a large amount of fluid bypass, mostly for heat reasons.

Define steering too easy. Does it wander? Now that you have power steering you could go with a smaller steering wheel to reduce your leverage.

Back the pressure out to the minimum available and see what happens. The Toyota box is a much "quicker" ratio than the old Ford manual, but with the correct pitman arm effective length, it is a good balance. Any looseness in the steering/ suspension will have a magnified effect with the assist. If no looseness is found on static inspection; might remove the pump belt for a short drive to eliminate the possibility of in-correct geometry. Make certain your new lower bearing or bushing has tight clearances; any looseness on the input shaft is greatly magnified by the ratio and power assist.

You can also see if you can find a larger pulley wheel for the pump to slow the action down

I'm just finishing the truck. Everything is brand new. I have under driven March pulleys. When I say steers to easy I mean when I start the motor and when its sitting in the driveway in park and if turn the steering wheel it will almost keep going on its own. I have two shims left so I'm going to pull the pump back apart and put them all in and see what happens.
