For anyone who has moved the gas tank

I'm piecing together some parts to put a mustang tank under the bed on my 62. I wanted to see what everyone did with the original filler location? Did you make a patch yourself? Is there any place that sells a patch panel for the corner? Any pics from your install? thanks

Hey Brian,

I did the tank move on my 66. Spent over 5K on body work. The body man made a circle of metal, bent it to follow the contours and welded it in, Sraped some bondo over it and we have a "shaved" gas cap.

thanks for the pic, I'm deffinately not gonna spend anywhere near that on bodywork on my 62. You have any finished pics?

I spent even more than that on bodywork, long story. But the method was the same as above. I used a bronco2 tank and have a '78 filler door on the side.

i was gonna put the filler in the bed, i want it as smooth as possible on the sides. Good looking truck, i like the color combo

This was on a truck for sale on eGouge a while back, I think it's a bitchin' idea.

Obviously, it's not a 'Stang tank, but one that's mounted to the front of the bed...something similar could be done with a 'Stang tank, I would think. I'd do a little more finish work inside though, so it's more appealing with the gas door open. Maybe stainless steel or something comparable in there, with a drain hose on the bottom.

Hey guys,
I put the gas cap under a small trap door on the floor of the bed.
Kept it simple. Pictures in the same gallery as the shaved gas cap.

That photo Slick Fan posted was from a 65 truck my buddy built. I didn't know it has been sold again. Wish I had seen the auction. A guy bought it a few years back at Daytona Turkey run for $17,500 and never rode in the truck!
He used the stock gas tank and reversed it to keep it close to the cab. Made a sheetmetal cover to hide the tank when the tonneau cover was open. Very slick idea.

That's pretty cool that you know the truck's history, I wish I made a note of how high the eGouge bidding went.

exactly! That's what I envision with the torino tank (or a similarly styled custom fabbed one)

In the very center of the bed floor, is a small flat section where the ribs come up to the flat spot. This is what I used on mine, used a boat filler, and everything came out really nice. Need to do some finish welding and fill work but other than that it looks good.

Oh yeah, forgot to say that I got this piece out of a parts truck bed.

Blackagatha: Have you got the torino tank yet. I am looking for exact measurements. I have heard that the 70 Torino tank is close to a direct fit but have not found a good one yet to check. Old mechanic (the best) I met recently said "in the day" the Torino tank install was done frequently around here. Would be great if it was a seasy as he made it out to be. Typically not my luck.

The 70's Cougar tank is exactly the same dimensions as the Mustang tank Skip did in his article. When I installed mine, I only had to rim the lower rails 1/8" on each side and it still fits under the bed.
I plan to run the fill line to the left on an oval pipe to fill from behind the drivers tail light.

I plan to use a heavy glass door type maganet to keep it closed. A little push at the top and click, filler door open.
I have the hinge design in my notebook, but have'nt apllied it to metal yet.

I relocated my filler to the bed, using an aircraft style filler, it makes for easy refuling on the go.
