Engine mounting.

The place to talk Slicks. All we ask is that discussion has something to do with slicks...

Engine mounting.

Post by jwh f-100 »

Has anyone used this "Engine Universal Frame Mount" from Dennis carpenter on a straight axle truck???

http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll ... 5Z5Z5GAAGO

If so, where in reference to the frame flanges did you mount it to get the correct engine angle?? Centered from top to bottom???

Here is my thought that has raised this question. I learned from this site that the engine/trans can be set at the same angle as the pinion or at 3 degrees. But when or if I am holding the engine with a crane, then set the angle and fasten down, then next let the weight off the crane I would guess the leaf springs will compress changing my angle. ARGH.

Looks like it bolts between the frame flanges. I have never used one so I'm not sure. I would attach the engine to the mount and loosely locate the engine and transmission, get the engine in the side to side and front to back position you want it in and tack weld the mount in place. Then fab your tranny mount to get the angle you require (what ever % is necessary for pinion angle). Once you are satisfied with what you have take the engine and trans out and finish the mount either welded or bolted. You should then have a nice install.
Patience is the word here and ask lots of questions if you get stuck. Good luck

Universal mounts

I used a very simular Trans-Dapt adapter on my 64 years ago. Put a 302/C-4 in it. Worked like a charm. You do have to remove that crossmember behind the engine though. It really gets in the way.
Good luck, Phil

Those should work just fine for a 302 or a 351. I would not use them for anything larger as they can not handle the torque from a BB.

Thank You Guys.

Kinda what I was thinking/wondering, so thanks!

I have a 2:75 rear on the way and need to order the engine mount, I'm stoked!!!

I would use the tube mount since if you have to cut any crossmembers out at least the tube mount will replace it instead of those bolt on ear mounts if that what your talking about that just go in the channel

Here's a link to the adapters I used.
After you get there click on UNIVERSAL SWAP MOTOR MOUNTS.

Thanks for the link Phil. I did a search for dealers in my area and I have one 20mi. away. I called and checked on price and they seem to be a good price (same as DC for mount and pads) and I will save on shipping. Also can have them the day after I order them. Thanks!

Phil, Why did you need to remove the crossmember at the back of the engine? I was looking last night at it seems I'll have the room I need with it in there. Unless the C4 made the difference????

Here's another question. How does the drive shaft need to be lined up? Straight shot from the tailshaft yoke to the pinion yoke or (the way it appears now but I hate to give the PO any credit) front shaft lined with the engine/tranny and then from center bearing down to the pinion yoke?

Thanks!!!! Jason

64 engine swap

Post by Customcab4x4 »

The crossmember was just in the way, big time. It's been a long time, but I think the problem was that the tranny would be REAL hard to pull later, if need be. And the C-4 is a pretty small tranny.
As far as the drive shaft went: I put in a one piece from a big Chrysler Newport (I think) Mid 70's. Like I said....it was a long time ago.

Good luck, Phil

Well I'm bumping this looking for some thoughts. I am getting ready to reinstall my engine with a tube transdapt engine mount. I am looking for pros and cons anyone may have of installing the engine and trans centered or to the right as they were from factory.

The way the tube is built it would drop in without any modifications so I guess the thing to do is set the tube in the frame, drop the engine in and take a look. If I want to move it to the right, no problem as the tube will come back out for welding anyway.

Your thoughts will be appreciated.

PS I "think" maybe the reason Phil (Customcab4x4) removed the crossmember behind the engine and I do not need to is because the added space I have by removing the floor pan. Maybe he has a 3 speed/auto truck without the cover...... Just Guessing :-)
