uni rearend

Post by 4wheelerbill »

I'm sure this topic has been discussed before ,but i haven't seen anything about it. I would like to know which disc brake rearend is the closest in width to a stock 62. I am also needing 4 1/2 bolt pattern to match my front.

Yup, that may work. I have not tried it but have heard that others have done it. Hawkrod

disc brakes

Post by Truckrat »

There are bolt on disc brake kits from several suppliers for these 9 inch truck rearends. They will fit your stock rear axle and the emergency brake will hook right up. Check with CPP or Speedway to name a couple. They advertise in the classic truck magazines. TR

Yes, but that does not solve his bolt pattern mismatch problem. He specifically noted he needs to change the bolt pattern to match his front so a disc brake kit for a stock bolt pattern would be useless to him. Hawkrod

Does anyone know if the expedition rear end is fairly close to the truck , as far as width goes. I heard they all have the 8.8 rearend wich is plenty heavy enough for me , and they have leaf springs that mount the rear on top of the springs, which is what i was going to do anyway.

The late model rears (expedition) are way too wide,Ive used a mid 90's crown vic on a 70 model was within an inch or so,worked out great using factory 4bar setup.Or use a car 9" with crownvic or explorer brakes and fab a couple of brackets.Or if your lucky find a Lincoln versailles/upscale granada from the 70's,but parts are hard to locate and expensive.good luck.

Already checked a 02 explorer and housing is too narrow and leaf perches were about 6 inches off per side, that would be too easy I guess.

disc brake swap

Post by Truckrat »

You're right Hawk, I did forget about the bolt pattern.
I drive a 99 Explorer, and it has the 5 on 4 1/2 bolt pattern. A while back I remember somebody else was talking about using them under a slick.
I'll just go out and measure it for width and distance between leaf springs
because now MY curiosity is up.
Ok, measuring from center to center on the tire tread is 59''.
center to center on the leaf springs is 39 1/4''
and from the back of the disc brake rotor to the edge of the leaf spring
is 6 1/2''. I didn't take the wheels off to measure, just crawled under and
did it this way. My Explorer has the stock alloy wheels still on it with 235R75x15 tires. Since I don't know the dimensions of the Slick 9'' rear
axles, I am thinking this may be just a tad narrower, but not by much.
I'll bet Hawk or someone else does. TR
