I have a '66 F100 Styleside 6' bed. I want to remove the bed, flip it over and undercoat the bottom and the frame.
I have a few questions. I want to use POR 15 on the bed and frame.
I will be doing this in my driveway.
It is not quite springtime here yet (southern New England) is is ok to use POR 15 at cooler temperatures (30s to50s)?
I plan on brushing it on. The bed and frame have surface rust (no holes).
What prep is needed? Can I really paint this stuff over rust? Is it OK to put it on the leaf springs? I will apreciate any tips and pointers from anyone with experience with POR 15 and similar applications.
Undercoating POR 15 ??

Sam. I couldnt tell you on weather you can use it in colder temperatures or not. I havent read the instructions in a while. what I would recomend you should do is go to the website. order the trial kit. its 20 bucks. buy extra marine clean and metal prep about a quart of each should be plenty. then do the bed underneath as you want. the small can the POR15 comes in is tiny but goes a very very long way I put 3 coats on my front straight axel and there is stil lmore than half of a can left.
It is a rust neutralizer and you just paint it on over the rust. you dont want to make all smooth by sanding it down just follow the instructions
( its only one page) and youll do fine remember to wear gloves or youll wear the POR

Samdog,
as long as the temp does not go below freezing at night for a few days after you use the POR you should be fine.i did mine several years ago in the late spring way up here with no problems

I ve had mixed results with POR 15. Ive had it peel off before a few times.
I recently had my faith restored to a degree though. My F100 bed was solid smooth surface rust. I cleaned it with Dawn dish soap, POR marine clean and I also used their Metal Ready.
I found you pretty much have to wash everything off THOROUGHLY.
Let it all dry and apply the POR. I left the truck out all winter, hauled some stuff and just abused it in general. So far its held up very well. Eventually I'll bed liner over it. Its all dull now.
Now I am skipping the prep is its solid pitted rust. I just had a restorer guy stop over to quote my Fairlane and we had a long talk about POR
He said that the Metal ready has its own rust inhibitor and that they don't work well together. Said you have to clean it off.
Also when he looked at my stripped car he mentioned that in areas that have pitting in the surface to paint POR on it and let it dry.
He said when they go to paint the car they would wheel it all off but it would stay in any pits or crevasses.
the can says you need to use a second container or the lid will stick on.
Its BS though, Just pop the lid and take a screwdriver and hammer and put a few holes in the lip of the can, down in the groove. It will then drain back into the can.
