Stinkin' Lincoln 460 is finally done.

Post by Slick Fan »

Sure enough, just as the previous owner alluded to, the original engine seems to have scattered it's lower end into the oil pan...I bet it had something to do with the 1.5 gallons of coolant I drained out with the oil yesterday.
I haven't pulled the engine yet, but the telltale outward dents in the oil pan said enough. I found another engine I can use & tore it apart to see what I'm working with. It's been rebuilt fairly recently & still has a good cross-hatch in the cylinders, so I'm planning on re-ringing it, slapping in fresh bearings & doing a valve job on the Lincoln's original heads.

I haven't played with 460's too much. I've mainly done valve jobs, or crank bearing replacements, or timing chain replacements, but this is my first thorough teardown of one...so I have questions.
I lurked around a couple hours yesterday on 460ford.com, but those guys are mainly into building ground pounders, not mostly stockers.

Ok so, I'm planning on putting in a "zero" degree timing gear & chain set, instead of the 8 degree retarded set that's probably in it now...shouldn't affect anything emission related, right?
Then I'm thinking that THIS CAM will probably work well for a mostly stock engine, along with the aforementioned "zero" timing set...whaddya think? :)
Any other good building ideas you'd like to throw in would be appreciated, too.

I just want it to run well, with maybe a bit more poop than it would have had originally & still be okay with emission sniffers. If it won't pass emissions, I'll be really bummed.

Oh & here's some new pics of the BIG playtoy!
The more I play with this big 'ol car, the more it grows on me. :D

That is neat and sweet. I really like that roof. The car looks like it was well taken care of. I'm not one to tell anyone what to do with engines but just do your research and you should be ok.
Nice car.

Thanks, guys. Yeah, I don't expect to be burning through too many tanks of gas in this baby. I bet I could spend $250 filling up gas tanks between this thing & my Dentside.

A beautiful car! You should be OK with that cam. Looks like a fairly mild grind which is what you would want in that car. Good luck.

That's actually very nice! I like that big sunroof in it, never seen one before. My personal favorite Lincoln is the MK Vs.

Slick on the 460ford site get ahold of The Mad Porter & Rmcompany call and talk to either one of them. They both know their stuff on mild 460's.

I ran that cam in my `83 f250 4x4 with the straight up timing set, edelbrock performer intake, and stock 600 holley. It worked really well, well enough to out run my `94 lightning  Chris

You said the more you play with this car, the more it grows on you. Perhaps you should quit playing because it is growing out of control! :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Looks great, I love Lincolns. That cam should work just dandy for you. I might suggest some flat top pistons to compliment that cam. It shoulf work real sweet aroung 9:5 or 10:1

Yep, they always say that putting in a "zero" timing set wakes them up. I wish I would have been able to drive this thing before, so I could see the difference. I've done timing chains to two truck 460's in the past, but I got both of those as non-runners, so I didn't get to compare the difference.
My red Highboy ran well, but it was also sorta low geared.

Man what a ride! :D That timeing gear will help a bunch.the 460 in the Lincs had about 365 hp in 69 and 70 or so.then in 74,when my Abe was born, they reduced the hp to 200.Yeeks. :( It still moves along ok.
You will enjoy that car,and if you drive it like you have some sense,it should get around 13-14 mpg on the highway. But if you make the same mistake I made with mine, and put dual flowmasters on it,you will want to hear them talk once in a while, all the time.

Yeah, that's better than I get in my Dentside too.
I hope I can get that kind of mileage, then I may drive it more often this summer...like once a week, instead of once a month, like I'm planning.
I think I'll probably leave the stock exhaust there.

thats a sweet ride, my mom had a 72 continental with the 460 when I was a young kido. thing hauled ass and was bigger than a cruise ship. It had that cool speedo which slid across the instrument bezel and went from black to white instead of a needle  I didnt look at the cam because I am still on dial up until next week sometime. But I can tel lyou the 460s that I have owned always ran good. the one before the 64 was in a 85 F250 4x4 XLT long bed. It would get 12-14 highway with my tune up on it and was really strong. I wish I never traded it in for the 7.3l  the sad part was I could see the fuel guage move @ 65 mph but @ 85 it would just sit still and hang on. Even with 4.10 gearing and a 4 speed it was just getting into its power curve and barely working. Anyways I hope you like that car and take really good care of it

It's a Comp Cams #FF 268H-10 with .494 lift & .268 duration. :)

Originally, I bought this thing for two reasons...to save it from possibly being derbied (because that seems to be a big thing around here), and to flip once I got it running, hopefully for enough of a profit to further some of my other projects.
I'll probably slap it on eGouge once I get it back together...however, if it doesn't bid very high, I won't have any problem just holding onto it & giving it a good home. :D I haven't sunk enough money into it to be a financial burdon, besides I like this car more every time I look at it...wasn't really expecting that, originally.
My wife & kids on the other hand, are still in the "it's a big barge" mode, for some reason. :hm:
