aod swap

Just curious if anyone has done an aod swap into their slick. On the way to dad's shop this morning to paint the wheels for the unibody, and the output shaft on the tranny snapped off between the tranny and transfer case. I pulled it out and checked the carnage this morning. Looks like the aod upgrade is coming sooner than expected. I just picked up a borg warner 1356 t-case and everything to go with it that will mate to the aod. Had planned on doing this swap, just not this soon. Guess next weedend I get to tear the aod apart and figure out what all parts I need for the overhaul. So far, the most diffucult part looks to be the tranny crossmember is riveted in. May take a little enginering to fab a mount. Curious how any of you did this if you have done this swap.

Hi Chris I have not donr it and I'm sure the guys will chime in but it would be nice to know what motor is in the truck you are putting the AOD in?

When I bought the truck, I was told it was on a 78 bronco chasis. Supposedly a 351m, but after investigating I found out it is on a 66 pickup chasis and it has 351c 2v.

Bonus on the Cleveland, that usually goes the other way...the Modifieds usually become Clevelands at sale time.

Merle, (member Prost66) has an AOD behind a Cleveland in his truck. And that puppy gets up and GOES

We put 2 AOD's in my son's 63. It is behind a 302. We used a Lokar kickdown cable to make sure we didn't burn up the second AOD. It has performed flawlessly since installing it 5-6 years ago. Just make sure that the cable is adjusted correctly!!!
A hint,, using a newer transmission will insure that yours has the upgrades made during their production.

I,m getting ready to order the lokar cable and throttle spring kit to match it. My dad runs a tranny shop, so I have a little bit of an advantage to get the good parts to make it strong and live a long life. Just kind of curious how difficult it will be as far as the crossmember goes. It is riveted in and is also riveted to the radius arm brackets so not a lot to really do there as far as moving it. I'm sure once I get it up in there, it won't be that bad. Chris

What year is your truck? I have an AOD in my 71, chassis is almost the same as a 65-66. I used the 3 speed bolt in manual crossmember, had to slide it back a couple of inches. trans seems fine, shifts good.

Adjusting the carb & lokar wasn't too hard after getting some advice from others before me. I'd pull on wire of the kick down, and get it so it was just a slight bit of tension, and tighten the nut on the carb that holds it in place. IF you get it too loose, if shifts so soft you can't feel it shift and ths is suppose to be bad for trans life. If it is too tight, not suppose to damage the trans, but those hard shifts my scare you. I got mine to were I can feel it, but it doesn't jar the truck.

My truck is a 63 short uni on a 66 4x4 frame. It had the np 435 4-speed and the dana 21 single speed transfer case. The output shaft snapped in two between the trans and transfer case.
