'66 radiator support butchery

Post by 66 POJ »

I bought one that has a near perfect bottom. Has anyone here attempted to remove the bottom support and attach it to another one? The part I'm refering to is the thicker piece which actually supports the assembly on the frame. I'm considering grinding the welds and use it on my original which is in better shape aside from the mounts.

I have been looking for a replacement. Haven't found one so I purchased a piece of sheet metal and am slowly cutting off the rusted bottom and trying to fit this piece in. Looks like it will take awhile since I don't have much experience doing this kind of work. My truck will always be a driver so I am not too worried about how it looks as long as the fenders and hood stay on straight!

BTW I am taking pictures as I go and will post if I am successful. :D :D

A member here had some pics of a core support he rebuilt. If you do a search (and a lot of reading) you will likely find them. As far as splicing 2 separate panels together, gets done all the time. Measure twice - cut once is the key, also remember to to tack it in several places, remeasure and then fill in the gaps in the weld in small sections alternating areas.

core support

Post by 66freezerburn »

I repaired my badly rusted core support,I think it looks pretty good!

What I first did is media blasted the whole thing 1 to clean it for paint and 2
it found many weak spots that needed attention.

Then I cut the bad sections out with a plasma cutter but a zip cut will work.
the I used cardboard as a template, transfered it to 16 or 18(cant remember) guage and welded it and hamered it to shape/contours.

as for the bottom piece that bolts to the frame I used a piece of L channel.

I will post pictures soon.
