Short Uni on Crown Vic: Let's see some pics!

Well, I'm probably getting way ahead of myself, but I'm already starting to think about my next big Slick-related undertaking.

I keep hearing about these legendary beasts with the clean lines of a uni and the smooth big-car handling of a Crown Vic, but have yet to actually see one. I need some inspiration. I read over the most recent CV swap thread and it was very informative, but I'm curious as to what the uni-specific fitment issues may be.

Foodstick did his short Uni on a LTD frame and I am sure he has pics. I also know bitlittle and a couple more have done the same as I have done with a non-uni slick. I can contact foodstick and see if he can send me some pics or post them. Matt and I helped him quite a bit and maybe we can answer some of your questions about it......Kid

Thanks kid, that'd be great! Maybe he could post them here so everyone can see. Some more pics of non-uni's would be good too.

Thanks for the link, JC. I guess I'll register on the old site again and look it up. I'll see if that works.

We'll see what happens. I haven't decided for sure yet if this is the route I want to take. It'll be a long-term project-in-waiting for sure. I probably won't make any decisions until spring at least.

I may be picking up that short uni though. I don't think the guy wants much for it. Bad floor, but good doors and a decent windshield. I'll probably take what I need for my Merc, then let the shortie sit for a while until I get to it.

Damn I would like to find that RC cruiser that the guy was killed in on the side of the road in july in Leduc. Looked like it would suit my needs perfect.

Is a later model more desirable? Or is it just that late-model police cruisers are easier to find than the 80's variety?

Late model police special=less miles=less parts and bushings to buy=cheap=happy Scotsman

You can only get Crown Vics as cop cars in Canada since about 2002 or so. Only mushy-suspension Mercs available to the gen. public. Taxi companies line up to pick up CV's from the police auctions. (T'ank you velly much)

If I could get the whole thing under there for < $500 with new drive train/running gear I would be giggling like a little guuuurrl

There were those handling package Mercs with the 16" wheels.

haha thats just a tad morbid there

I know I'm a bit of a youngin', specially when it comes to working on these things, but why do you folks want police cruisers? I've had several oppurtunities to buy police cruisers and ran away as fast as I could.

Seems to me that they pretty much beat the tar out of them, run the wheels off of them and all around abused them to the point I'd rather buy a rental with 500,000+ miles on it.

I would actually think you'd end up replacing more things on one than if you just went to an auto-insurance auction and bought a roll over crown vic with about 50K on it. (those insurance auctions can be very nice places to find stuff like that by the way. Problem is that most require memberships unless you can find a friend that is a member or pay a current member $50 to bid for you)

This is why.
I dont want to spend $800 in gas driving to Wa. State to get a wrecked $100 car, and then still have to get rid of the unwanted body.. I can get an older Merc or CV in any junk yard., but one with low miles, a PS suspension, and OD tranny and a 4.6 would be cool.

im plannin on using the k member from a 04 prolly will get started on it in a month or so i can get my frame powercoated.from what ive seen atleast with a uni id think id rather do that than swap the whole frame under one.

If I attempted this swap, I would be out looking for an 03 or 04 Marauder. I like the rear air suspension on these. Plus if you find one, it likely would be under 100,000 miles. Just a crazy old mans idea...............

That sounds cool! A uni on modern suspension would be an interesting project, the best of both worlds.

If you buy a LTD that is a running driving car and you have some welding skills you can build that truck very cost effective, I would say you could do that cheaper than anything out there.

As for the newer Crowns ( LTD ) buyer beware as these frames are not near as strong as the older ones and that does make a HUGE difference.

As for the 4.6 you can run this engine with a AOD tranny if you use the 1980 up 302 flywheel that is balanced 50 ounces. The crankshaft and the block have the 302 bolt pattern and the 4.6 is balanced 50 ounces.

Anyone tried this w/ a long-bed & lengthened chassis?

I've been toying w/ this idea for my '66....just need to know the best year(s) of CV donor to use (strongest frame & correct steering box location).

No prpblem Doc glad to be at your service

. The 79 to 91 is the best years after that they started weaking the frames and when they went to the removeable crossmember 05 I think they were a disater.

I too have considered the long bed Idea the 2 problems that I see are simply cut the factory rails out and replace with tubing front to rear and you may have to go with a 2 piece drive shaft as that would be a perty good strecth.
