Cigarette lighter???

Post by semotrucker »

Did you have to order a cigarette lighter in our trucks to get one?My truck has an extra hole/cutout in the dash where I think a lighter should go but it has a chrome plug in it.Reason for asking is I wanna put one in to be able to charge my phone/run a cb when I take it on trips.

Cam

P.S. Build sheet says nothing about lighter.

i dont like using the lighter for powering things as i need it for its original purpose.

in my 66 4x4 i installed a 12v power tap under the dash so i can plug in my phone or 1 million cp spotlight.

i don't know about having to order one cam. every truck i have owned has had a lighter in it. i've never seen one without one. back in the day truck owners smoked. it was a universal truth.
my 08 mustang doesn't even have an ashtray. the lighter is a "power point". times sure do change.

My truck didn't have one. Dad never smoked, neither do I (anymore, long story)....

I wanted the cigarette lighter with the chrome ring that says "Cigarette Lighter" Those were not reproduced, at least not three years ago. Snagged one off ebay, but it was spendy, like $40 I think.

It fits perfectly in the first hole to the left of the steering column -- looks like its always been there. I got it for power source as well, but I've not been using it. On my most recent long trip, my MP3 player had juice for 7 hours and that was longer than the trip.....

Planned/considered upgrades:
Perhaps power brakes, 300 I6 motor and JUST maybe, AC!

Thanks guys...input is always good. Greg...I look forward to hearing from you...I would prefer an orig Ford piece as to an aftermarket one.

Cam, found it.
Doesn't have the original insert (later - probably 80s Ford) but all you have to do is get the knob from DC and change it, dash piece is for a Slick though. PM me your addy and I'll get it sent to you.

i have that same chrome plug and have seen it in other trucks as a cigarette lighter. Im sure thats what that is. I found a lighter receptacle in the help section of Advanced Auto but never put it in. The chrome plug was the lighter delete option. Its all the way on the right side of the speedometer. before the heater control on mine.

see it in my interior photo in between the steering wheel and the speedo. its the only decent pic of my interior i have. I saw a heavy Duty 64 in a junk yard and thats where the lighter was.

It might be nicer to hide it under the dash and out of sight unless you need it for its original function !
