I have valve covers off right now. Before I retired I bought some fancy aluminum ford racing covers made in China that are too tall to fit with the factory ducting.
I spent today preping the stock covers for paint.
When those go back on I'm leaning toward the carb and timing being the bug.
I wish now I would have changed the cam when I was doing the other. I'm pretty sure the lobes are 34 years old.
I have really only touched the cosmetic upper end stuff.

I left this open ended.
The issue other than the bow tie (
) was a freeze plug type thing that serves as an exhaust galley plug in the head. Was damn near impossible to find one to fit. A fella at a local machine shop had one in a drawer and charged me a liter of Pepsi for it.
Only problem now is the engine is too quiet.
Bought a Howard's cam, lifters, springs and timing chain to help fix that problem. Now I need to learn how to put it all together.

squiter is either clogged , or under the squitter is a needle and ball that can be obstruted or squitter is too small not letting enough gas or too big dumping too much gas + no matter what I am running I always put a spacer block under the carb to make run better 2" should be good

Power valve.
Its either the incorrect one for your vacuum, or it's blown out.
Check your vacuum and size the power valve accordingly.
Use your vacuum reading to properly size the valve. A general rule of thumb, if I remember correctly is you need a #7 valve for 14 inches of vacuum.
One of the carburetor guru's can clean up the right way to size the valve for me.
Also, you can change from the little 30cc accelerator pump to a 50cc pump to shoot a little more gas in the carb to help out a little bit.

Guys everything runs great now. I guess I confused ya.
I posted to this again today because I had left the topic open ended and never told you good folks what the gremlin was.
It was an exhaust plug in the front of the head --like a freeze plug-- that had corroded thru. As soon as it was replaced the truck ran smooth as can be. I was just funning that it runs too quietly now.

i had a holy, every time it burped it would blow out that power valve,,, they are too sensitiveezernut9mm wrote:didn't the earlier holleys have a problem with the power valve "blowing out"? what ever that means. i should really try and learn about some of this stuff.
