automatic transmission options for stock 352

Post by tarps3 »

I have been looking thru the forum for a while to read about the best way to swap an automatic transmission for the stock 3-speed (with OD) my truck currently has.

I'm not necessarily looking to make the change, but I'd like to know what I'm in for if I decide to go that direction.

Is there a place or a posting on the forum that compiles this information?
Has anyone posted a photographic step-by-step instruction?

for instance, I'd like to know:

- what transmissions will bolt up to my stock 352? I've had cruise-omatics in cars (with 352's) before but I don't much like the cracked housing that results when you shift into drive from reverse while the vehicle is still in motion.
- does it necessitate changing my steering column if I decide to install a floor shifter for the automatic? Can I leave the original column in place?
- how would this affect the floor hump? do I need to cut and rebuild the hump to make room for the new tranny?
- I assume I'd need to shorten the driveshaft
- which trannys use a vacuum modulator vs. linkage? if I go with the floor shifter, it would seem that the vacuum modulator would work best since I wouldn't have all the shift linkage betwen the column and tranny.
- I also assume I'd need to swap out the radiator for one with a tranny cooler.

Any thoughts or advice from those who have changed over?

thanks![/list]

Well the only thing I've read and heard is to go with the C6. I think the one I have (not in a truck) has the vacuum. You can go with the big hole in the floor and shifter boot, but I personaly think the cable shifter would be better. I didn't have the original kick down rod for my C4 so I got a lokar kickdown cable. Works like a charm. You could remove the manuel shifter arms and leave the same column until your ready to switch it out later. I imagine you would have to find a different driveshaft. Scrap yard here has a truck bed full of driveshafts. I imagine one near you has something similar. I found one close to the length I needed and had a machine shop shorten it for $30. Its a bit of work and money, but I am tired of shifting so I think its worth it.
All my tools are hammers except screwdrivers, those are chisels.

I have three of the crusimatics for these trucks, and most likely have the original drive shaft, if I can figure out which one is which. Not certain the trannies are the same for car and truck as the truck versions are always heavier built , for mrough ussage. If you go with the C6 which is a good choice, get a truck one.
