brake light wiring ?

Post by OLYELLER »

I am stumped. I removed my steering column and reinstalled and noticed something odd to me. In the plug from the harness is a wire coming from my brake booster. What goes into that? And where does the horn wire go to. All the signals work but the left over wire is from the brake booster and the only wire not plugged in from the column is the horn???? Thx for any help.

There are no wires that go to the brake booster. What year truck? You are probably talking about the two wires attached to the brake light pressure switch screwed into the master cylinder. The Red Black will go to the steering column. The other is the hot wire and go to the fuse panel.

I believe it is a red with black stripe that goes to the brake switch.

If the turn signal switch does not have a red/black wire and all the other wires are accounted for or correctly color coded I would attach it to the last remaining wire.

Let me jump in and see if I can answer your question.
First, the steering column.
There are six wires that come out of the column.
1. the wire that comes off the flasher connects to one of the six wires coming out of the steering column (the center tap) on the turn signal cam. It operates when the light bulb on which ever signal light the signal lever is set to operate and said turn light bulb is grounded.
2. There are 4 other wires that control the front and rear right and left turn signal lights in the front and rear of the truck.
There is a wire that is grounded when the horn button is pushed. When this wire is grounded, it operates the horn relay located on the passenger side of the inner fender or core support. You can locate this wire by using an ohm meter on the horn wire probe and the other probe put to a ground.
The separate signal wires will have to be identified separately. I have a thread in hints and tricks about wiring if you want to check it out.
The brake light has a wire coming out of the light switch and it is un-switched and is always hot. It goes thru the top firewall plug and connects to one terminal of your brake light switch. The other wire on the switch goes to the rear of the truck to the brake lights. *note that the brake lights are single element bulbs. The turn lights and park lights are in another socket and the bulb is a dual element.

The only bulb on my truck is a duel element bulb. One being the park/tail light element the second being turn signal/brake light element. If there is another single element bulb it would be a reverse light.
