Guys,
I'm replacing the tie rod ends on my 4X4 F100 front axle. Rockauto and my local parts store both came up with Moog ES150R and ES150L for parts. I installed them and they seem to pull up through the tapered portion of the Dana 44 too far. It really squishes the rubber seal. The split pin doesn't engage the notches in the castle nut.
This is no different than the ones I took off other than the rubber seal seemed to fit fine. I checked my cracked 1962 Dana 44 and it looks the same way too. I still think it is wrong though. I think the tapered portion of the tierod end should be slightly thicker so it doesn't get pulled so far into the axle housing. Is there supposed to be some sort of tapered bushing in there?
Thanks,
Nick

usually they come with new castle nuts
is there any difference in the height of the old/new castle nut ?
i have done several of those and not had any problem.
were the old ones turning in the tapered hole or loose? this would enlarge the size over time.
since i have several 4x4s i am going to look later and see if theres appear to be any difference in the factory/replacement ends

Hi Iceman,
The castle nuts are just about the same height- i mean within 0.030 or so.
the old tierods were not turning. I had to give them a rap with the big hammer to get them to pop free. I was just replacing them because they were rusty, grungy, and one of the rubber seals was about to fall off.
The tapered holes in the axle look perfect.

Hey Iceman,
Did you get chance to take a look at your factory and replacement ends? I don't mean to rush you. I'm not in a super-hurry. Just looking for answers.
Thanks!

the 62 f100 4x4 in the yard has washers between the nut and this was obviously not factory nor done by me.
my 66 f250 4x4 is like yours with the pin above the castles. it has not ever come loose . i do not remember thinking about this when installing them. i did put them in but it was almost 10 years ago.
looked at 2 later axles 3/4 ton closed knuckles from bumpsides.those look the way i think they should but use a shorter tube w longer ends so they are not the correct end unless using the tube too.
i will look and see what my parts book says about the tie rod ends

rubber bushings
Iceman,
When I tighten down the castle nuts, the rubber bushing ends up "inverting" due to a thickened flange at the top (part that goes around the tapered stud.) I think if I shorten that thickened flange to look like the one salvageable one, it won't invert when tightened down.
I'll still wait to instal until after you check out your parts books.
Thanks,
Nick

Installation
Iceman,
I installed them. I shortened the section of the rubber seal that actually seals to the tapered portion of the tierod end using a knife. Castle nuts torqued down just fine. Rubber seal stayed in place without inverting. The socket portion of the tierod end still rotates around the ball portion without binding against the cast portion of the enclosed knuckle so everything seems to be working just fine. I bent the cross pins into a shape that catches the notches of the castle nut even though they will never loosen up.
Later,
Nick
