Got her home... Now the 'fun' begins...

Post by andgott »

I picked my truck up from the shop today... I had about 40 miles to go, 20 of which was up and down a mountain with some nice swtichbacks- Which is why I had the brakes checked out before making the drive!!

It went ALMOST flawlessly- The only 'problem' that I had was when the drivers side door came open around a sharp curve- which scared the crap out of my wife who was following me... I just didn't 'slam' the door hard enough :)

Now, I get to sort out the problems, prioritize them, and fix them!!

Image
Peeling clearcoat on the hood... She was repainted in the 80s sometime...

Where the clearcoat is intact, it looks pretty nice-
Image

The only bad rust is in the bed-
Image

The only real dent is thanks to the 16 yr old that owned this truck for a few months prior to me- She made it 44 years without a major problem... The kid wasn't even aloud to leave his own property with the truck, yet he managed to do this-

Image

She needs a new interior- But that's EASY... I've done boats before, so I plan to do this work myself, too...
Image

Pretty clean under the hood, too-

And, Looks pretty good underneath as well-

There are a few things that I have to get done ASAP-

1) Brake/Tail lights don't work

2) Turn Signals Don't work

3) Parking Brake- Handle isn't connected to anything!

4) Speedometer doesn't work

5) Engine Temp gauge doesn't work

6) ALT light lights up...

7) BAD window rattle, and no handles!

8) No inside door handles

9) Bad tires, Ugly mismatched wheels

Other than that, it looks like most of it is cleanup and cosmetic...

I was going to do some things to the engine, like an electronic ignition, etc- But she is running REALLY well right now, so I don't think I'm going to mess with it... I shot a quick video-

http://youtu.be/BvJPHFLHRVM

It should be a fun project- And I'm sure I'm going to have a TON of questions!

Nice find should turn out to be a nice project. I notice that you are missing a lower gravel pan valance behind the front bumper that goes between bumper and lower grille. Might want to add that to the list of things to do and obtain for the body. Not major just something I notice that is missing.

LONG day- but I got a lot done!

I'm slowly working out the electrical system- It's a mess- The main problem that I have is that at some point when the steering column was replaced, they used the plug from the new one- But didn't hook everything up! This is the plug- if anyone recognizes it, let me know- It would be VERY helpful to have a wiring diagram so I can tell what wire goes where-

Image

I'm guessing that it's 70's sometime.

I DID get the turn signals working, although the same indicator lamp flashes on the dash no matter which side is flashing.

I think that the stop lights will be working once I've got the new switch in- I need to make a bracket for it tomorrow- But I think I've traced out all the wiring...

I've also got my 'new' factory wheels painted and ready to go- So I'll be getting some new rubber next week, too. Hopefully I'll be able to drive the truck to the tire store :)

Looks like the same connector on the 73 column I have.

I am in the process of wiring up some lights as well. What color wires go to what on your column?

There is almost no such thing as a Slick that has NO issues (I bought a rust free truck this time and have still torn all through it). You have a nice truck there and a good plan - if I failed to say it before;

Thanks for the ID on that connector- I downloaded the wiring diagram for a 74, and it looks the same- That will save some time!

So- I got out there bright and early, and got the last bits figured out before it got HOT today...

I have a pretty much fully functional electrical system now. Some previous owner had done some interesting things. It was wired so basically there were functioning headlights and tail lights, but nothing else. There were a lot of wires that were just disconnected, clipped, and taped off. Evidently they didn't believe in using connectors to splice wires, everything was twisted together and taped. Luckily, unlike the Jeep I just rewired, they didn't try to bypass the fuse panel!

The stop light switch needs a bracket still, which I should get made today, and I need to pick up a new headlight dimmer switch, too... Mine works, but not reliably. I figure while I've got the dash torn up, I'll replace the headlight switch as well, since the old one doesn't alway seem to work right.

Having the '74 wiring diagram helped a LOT- Many of the wires were the same color, but others were different... Between having that and a 'jumper' to test what wire did what, I was able to straighten it out pretty quickly. I'm going to LABLE everything, too- In case I (or someone else) every has to mess around down there!

The only thing that I can't get to work at the moment is the hazard lights- There is something not wired properly, and they don't work. And, Of course, they aren't on the wiring diagram that I have... Oh well.

I'll look at it this way- I only need those if I break down... And I'm never going to do THAT!!

I figured that out eventually once I finished tracing the wires out!!

A little more done today- I installed a bracket for the stop light switch-

Image

Everything worked fine, then I took it apart to tighten things, and when I reassembled it, I lost one of the nuts on the switch- It fell into the opening on the top of the steering column, never to be seen again... So, I'll have to get a new one (or a new switch) before it can be finalized... But- It works!

I also replaced the headlight switch and High/low selector switch. Both worked, but were marginal. Now, there is no problem!

The entire electrical system, with the exception of the 4 way flashers- is now 100% functional.... A BIG relief- It was a job I was dreading. I can live without flashers, for sure. Perhaps sometime down the line if I get bored I'll get back in there and play with them.

As for the wheels- I went with red & white-

Image

I think they look pretty good with the hubcaps, too- Which I also just painted-

Image

I'll be going to get some new tires this week... I've got a mix on there now- Some 215 75, some are 235 75... I think that the 235's are the original equipment?

Really like the wheels. Did something similar on my brake light switch, but I like how you drill a second hole to keep the bracket from moving at all. Nice.

Thanks. I think that the second bolt is PROBABLY overkill- The bracket was pretty solid even without it- But I figured I'd rather be sure. It IS the brake light, after all!!

I made the bracket in two pieces, so I could adjust all the angles perfectly. It seemed to work out pretty well. I got the switch fully installed and adjusted today, and it works perfectly! I'm happy to say that the truck is now ROAD LEGAL!

Hopefully the insurance will be straightened out soon, and I'll be ready to hit the road :)

The second anchor hole is a nice touch. Looks like a sucess. Hope that missing nut does not jamb up the steering someday (doubtful)!

Thanks... I think it will look nice- Not quite stock, but not over the top, either.

She cleaned up pretty well-

The paint/clearcoat that's on there is in bad shape in places... It's going to need a repaint down the line for sure, but until then I wanted to get it decent looking so I can USE it! She's actually got a kind of cool look now, at least in my opinion...

I gave up on getting the hood adjusted any better. There is a pretty big gap in the back, but the hinges are already all the way down. I think that they are just worn out.

The bed was nasty... I got rid of the excess rust, and plan to use a roll in bedliner to cover it for the time being. I need to have some sections of the bed floor replaced, but again, thats down the line.... This should get me by for a while, though.

I got the bed done today- This is a 'quick fix' until I do the sheet metal work that needs to be done- But that's a ways off. In the mean time, I wanted to protect what was left, and also make it look halfway decent-

Image

Looking a LOT Better than when I got it (see first post!)

I also got the parking brake working, too! The cable was disconnected at the firewall- I had to take it all apart to see how it connected- But once I had seen it, it was simple... It SEEMS to be functional now, it won't roll with it engaged- A real plus!

I also got the insurance straightened out- So I'll be venturing down the mountain to get some new tires in the very near future- Then, WATCH OUT!
