Power steering

Post by Alan Mclennan »

Some time ago!, I was chatting with Garbz about power steering for right hand drive trucks!, he`s suggestion was to just put a left hand box on the right hand side!, but on the out side of the rail!.
This idea may work!, but before I jump in and buy a power box from over there!, I`d like to know how well it will sit on the outside of the rail, does the input spline sit in the centre of the rail and how far offset does it put the spline for the Pittman arm?.
So if you have a power box sitting around and a bare chassis, could you please try this for me!, and give me some feed back as well as your thought`s on the idea!, I would much appreciate the help!
Honey, If I say I`ll fix something I will, there`s no need to remind me every 6 months!!

Alan I don't know if this will help, my slick has power steering that was added later, on the receipt it was listed as 69 f100 power steering kit.

I still have the straight axle steering box but it has a control valve and power ram attached to the steering ah la early mustang. It does look a bit cumbersome, but means you don't have to change the p/s box!

Leeroy have you got any pic`s of the set up?, I think the problem maybe the direction the Pittman arm travels.

Alan, forgive me if I am repeating what you already know, but I do not see it in this thread.
Over here, the front half of the frame dimensions are identical from '65 - '79, for F-100, F-150 and F-250 (2WD only, by the way). This allows later upgrades to be bolted into earlier trucks.
I added power steering to my '66 by using a '76 power steering box, a '78 power steering pump for a '78 - '96 (I added factory serpentine belts), and a power steering column from a '72 truck.
Note that the pitman arm must come from the donor truck year to correctly fit the box, but all '65 - '79 pitman arms will fit all years' steering linkages just fine.
The appropriate donors are '69 - '79 for the gearbox. You can use a '68 - '72 power steering column that looks more like the original '65/'66 column, but the '73-'79 power columns work just as well.

So, armed with that information, are these possibilities at all:
1. That OZ right hand frames are the same as described above?
2. That '73 - '79 F-100/250 trucks had right-hand power steering?
3. That you can harvest a later right-hand power steering setup and bolt it up to yours?

John, They never brought out a Power steer F100 down here!, never! and that's why it`s so difficult!.
I want this for Lenore!, as Last Sunday, I had to put her away with my work van in the drive, I nearly had a coronary! and trying to turn the wheel without moving to gain that extra turn!, isn't good for the steering components or me!.

Jim, yes it`s still twin I beam suspension, that would be great if you could do this for me!, thanks mate!

Alan:
I've seen threads where guys used Toyota power boxes on their slicks... any chance of adapting one of those? I've got to imagine there are Toy's down under?

Leeroy, No sweat mate!.

Paul, I`ve heard that the Datsun 280c and the 260c had power box`s that with minor fab work can be used!, the big problem is they are like finding a mint condition twin cab XL F100 Uni, or they cost that much!

Blue Mountain John, I got your SMS today thanks mate!, but I have a new mobile and I`m not up to speed typing on it yet!, You don`t happen to know where one is do you?

Alan:
I would've thought they'd use a box out of a Toy pickup '80s-'90s.
Maybe pm this sully5 guy & ask what box he used??
