VIN Decoding

Post by James »

Hello. I am new to the group, just purchased a '66 F100. Looking for clarification on my VIN body and engine tags.

VIN F10YP858974
Colour AM
Trans G
Axel 08
GVRW 5000
HP 172

Engine Tag
352 66 6
5M 290S

What I gather via Slick 60's website is that my truck has a 352 V8. Did this engine have different HP ratings from the factory? As you can see mine states 172hp but the website claims 208.

Would someone be kind enough to decode the engine tag for me, I have no idea what the number combinations represent!

Thanks in advance.

James,

I'm sure that there are guys on this site that are better at this than me. But, I'll take a stab at it...

F10 = F-100 - 2 Wheel Drive

Y = The Engine Code. However, "Y" Engine Codes don't start until 1967 (352 CID 2V carb.).

P = Assembly Plant (Twin Cities, MN)

858974 = Unit Number (Serial #)

Good luck with your project...Sinc

James, our site here has a pretty good VIN decoder. You can go to the top of this page and click on "FordTruk.com Home". Then on the page that comes up, click on "Technical" and then when that page loads up, click on VIN Decoder....or you can just click->HERE<-.

I did utilize the decoder on the website but I too found that the Y engine code is not used until '67. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

My '66 starts with F10YK... in it's VIN & I know for sure it had a 352 in it originally.
Is your truck still wearing it's black & white color combo?

Welcome aboard, post some pics if you've got 'em! :D

I too was confused about the "Y" engine code. My 66's VIN is F10YD8178xx - hence the name, FLOYD. ;)

As for HP ratings...I haven't got a straight answer on that either. I think the correct answer is "not enough," which is why I'm on the prowl for a 390 to build. :D

Heh, that's pretty good. :lol:
Mine doesn't have that same 'ring' to it...FLOYK doesn't seem to roll as well as FLOYD. :lol:
