223 6cyl Air Conditioning
223 6cyl Air Conditioning
Is any body running AC on a 223? Will the little motor handle it? I suspect mounting a little Sanden one would have to be a home fabricated project. Any thoughts?

My truck originally had a 223 in it. My Dad had put an a/c unit in it and it handled it fine. He even pulled a trailer with a 1000 lb. sand car on it along with all of his camping gear and it still did fine. It was a little slow going up the 6% grade going to flagstaff but it still made it.
He found a kit with all of the mounts in it. It used the old York style compressor at that time so if you can find one of those mounts, I am sure that there is a conversion mount adaptor to a Sanden compressor.

Was the 223 used in the '50s trucks? That might get you to an aftermarket kit with the brackets and pulleys if true.

I knew someone would have experienced AC in a 223 powered slick. They had, thanks Kieth for your memory. I expected some one had installed one, sure enough. Check out "broke old prospector"s post (with pics) over on Ford Truck Enthusiast.

you need to get one of those dashpots that up the idle when the compressor kicks on. the 240 in cam's truck had a/c and it was hard to get the carb to idle right with the load of the a/c compressor always changing the idle needs.

Cams truck had the York compressor also....
Those things don't like to run at low RPMs
They get jerky & really can make an idling engine pull down
The 223 doesn't have a lot to spare anyway
I would go with a sanden rotary compressor....
WAY smoother
