My 62 shortbox build

I'm finally getting started on the build. Took awhile to gather some of the parts and motivation but that is finally coming together. Here's what I started with.

Image

After I cleaned it up a bit.

Image

Sand blasted the front of the frame and moved it into the shop.

Image

It's going to need some floors.

Image

Some work in the bed.

Image

But it could be worse.

I've purchased an Industrial Chassis Dakota kit. I'm not sure what I will do to lower the rear.
5.0 and an AOD from a Foxbody Mustang.

The wife has requested air conditioning, maybe power windows. Two tone paint.

I'm looking forward to your build.

MercuryV8 I bought the truck last spring.

Made some progress today. Removed most everything off the front of the frame.

Unpacked the parts from Industrial Chassis.

Image

And a bit of test fitting.

Kit looks fantastic. I'm looking forward to getting this installed.

Made some progress today, I was able to get the crossmember tacked in. As soon as I am able to pick up my Dakota parts I will be able to finish the install.

Image

Still a long way to go but it's starting to get to go in the right direction.

Image

I still haven't decided how I should lower the rear.

When I first lowered mine in the rear, I just took out leafs until it sat where I wanted it. But that was a little soft. Then I swapped out the springs for a newer set and flipped the axle to the top of the spring. With the CV front end in it, the rocker of the truck sits parallel with the ground.

I've been thinking of flipping the axle. How did you handle the shock issue? I wonder if the Fatman Fabrications or Airbagit kits would be a good idea.

I like the idea that I could maintain some load capacity.

I just removed the overloads, extended the rear spring shackles like bigredtod did on the 62 land spreed uni

I used a different ifs but it got low enough for my needs

Sorry, this is the best pic I have of it right now. The frame actually leans a little forward to mimic the angle of the original shock placement. I notched the frame aswell. Most guys lay the shocks almost flat, and at that point they really don't do a whole lot.

Image

This will all be gone shortly, I hope! I have am independent out of a Mark VIII I want to put in.

Sits flat, no rake at all.

I take it you aren't happy with the current setup? A buddy of mine is trying to convince me to put in a four link and coil overs. He says I will be much happier with the ride.

I don't mind the ride, it a little choppy, but it handles like a go-cart. Its actually quite fun to drive. The independent will give me a usable box back, and the rear won't bottom anymore. Plus, I've got the mark VIII just sitting there, may as well use the parts.

A little more progress today. Disassembly and test fitting some crusty Dakota parts.

New springs.

This kit really has worked out well. I would recommend it to anyone who is curious about it.

Got it back down on the ground today. Looks great to me. I'm really impressed with how it went together and the finish of the supplied parts.

Image

I see that Industrial Chassis is working on a four link rear end kit. I think I will try and wait for it to be available.

AB62: Lookin good!

That four link looks good as well, my only question is how far above the original elevation of the box floor will the kickup protrude?
I may be alone on this, but I don't care for the look of a floor with a raised portion between the tubs to clear the kicked up rails (or the top of the diff) ..... I would rather have the whole floor raised than only a portion. To me, the floor looks better flat, and does not hinder loading or carrying cargo, other than the loss of some depth:)
