In-between the exhaust and intake manifolds is there a gasket required?
The shop manual doesn't show one, but my gasket set (felpro ms 9960) came with one that could be modified to fit. The holes line up for the manifold on the 223 but it has an extra passage and bolt hole that would need to be trimmed I figure for one of the other applications. According to their site this set is for 223, 215 and 262.
My gut told me to put the gasket in there but I don't want to put things out of alignment or something.

Re: Ford 223 Exhaust - Intake gasket
Id have to go look on my second header/exhaust set up still attached to the head of my old engine. The one I disassembled I don't recall there being a gasket between them. But then again, I don't remember there being an "opening" between the exhaust side and the intake side. If there ins't then there wouldn't need a gasket. Gasket only to seal an opening.
I can't see one in the drawing either, but you never know.
Do you remember taking one out?

Re: Ford 223 Exhaust - Intake gasket
All the gasket kits come with them, the Clifford set up comes with them. The original, perfectly mated surfaces may not have come with them, but due to heat cycles and warpage, they may not seal, I would use a set.
Simple RTV between intake and exhaust, above the heat riser, should do the trick although gaskets are available.

Re: Ford 223 Exhaust - Intake gasket
I've got a spare set of manifolds that are still attached, I'd have to take a look to see if there's evidence of a gasket or not.

Re: Ford 223 Exhaust - Intake gasket
I recently worked on a 223 and the gasket set came with the wrong gasket for between the manifolds and made one.
Re: Ford 223 Exhaust - Intake gasket
I had one in mine when disassembled it just crumbled. I made a new one out of rtv and a bunch of layers of aluminum foil. (a sandwhich) worked perfect.

Bird55, I have heard of a lot of ''Old School'' methods
to make something work. Even made my own gaskets for things
as well. That's a new one on me. TR

Re: Ford 223 Exhaust - Intake gasket
I have a friend who is a heating & cooling guy
He bought an old snowmobile that had a bad head gasket
Couldn't get one for it , so he made one out of a copper sheet
He cut it all out.. Holes for the head bolts & everything
Then he annealed it (made it soft)
Bolted it down tight
Never had a bit of trouble with that engine after that

Re: Ford 223 Exhaust - Intake gasket
I have been told by a respected and experienced old Ford mechanic that there were no gaskets on the exhaust manifolds when our trucks were built. I followed that up with some research on-line and did find some supporting info to that effect. Since my '65 is over 50 years old it seemed to me that there might have been a lot of things happen over that time to change those perfectly machined and matched surfaces so I opted for the copper gaskets which should hold up to the heat and expansion / contraction cycles for a very long time. I also added the cam lock type manifold bolts to lessen the possibility of loosening.
I installed an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold and that got a new gasket with RTV. I'm pretty sure the old intake manifold had a gasket originally.
