Painted grill

Post by Michael Bryce Winnick »

I have a 66 f-100 longbed custom cab. The grill is chrome and the bumpers are painted white. Is this how they came. Were the grills ever painted white?

Did the custom cab come with white bumpers, but chrome grill? This is what I have.

Yes, the custom cab consisted of an aluminum grill and painted white bumper. The "deluxe" custom cab came with the chrome front bumper. The standard model came with painted grill and bumper. On aluminum and painted grills, pay attention to the black trim paint. The black trim paint is often missing or faded out on these trucks, detail which is greatly needed.

Realize that a chromed grille is usually steel, and not OEM available in '66.
An aluminum grille isn't usually chromed or painted (much), it is mostly raw aluminum.

Most '66s were shipped with either a painted steel grille or an aluminum grille with some black paint 'at the fringes'.

Most '66s could be had with either a chrome front bumper or a painted front bumper; regardless of what grille it came with. Dealers could install them anytime.

Who knows what parts have been mixed and matched or simply look different now since it drove off the FoMoCo lot 42 years ago.

Case in point: I recently bought a '65 that had an aluminum grille that a past owner had painted solid BLACK....who knows why...

Good Luck!

73-79 rear bumpers have a different shape on the step area around the taillights, due to the wider 1 piece plastic taillights and does not quite match the 65-72.

not to mention the wider frame width in the rear on some later 70s trucks.
