Still stripping the brushed on (read THICK) paint but I am making progress. This never is a quick process but the time is worth it, using oven cleaner it loosens the paint but doesn't harm the plastic like sanding would.
These "94" F150 pics are from a "kit bash", I took 2 AMT 92 F 150 regular cab long bed kits, cut down on e bed, cut and grafted the cabs together and made a Supercab Shortbed, some frame part modification was needed too, still some minor sanding left and make 1/4 windows for it. I am modeling the 94 I used to own that my Dad now has, I still have graft the 2 interior tubs together. It will also be a 4x4 when it's done, I even have a set of after market 1/25 scale 33x12.50s for it cause those are what I had on the full size one. The paint job will be the 2 tone copper from the mid 90s, Ford touch up paint. Alot of this is done with a ruler that converts full size into 1/25 scale.
I also have one being converted from a XLT to an XL regular cab long bed & 4x4, modeling another 94 F 150 I used to own.

Greg I have not built a model in many moons and mine were crude at best but I understand how much work and effort goes into them.

Have a good buddy that started a model company called 32nd parallel
they made model submarine and hydrofoil boat kits.

Staggering amount of labor went into his models.

I am now watching the last 2 Pat, bid on one, Thanks! lol.
I have about 40 hrs into the F 150 right now, bout 3 left on the body (one of the 1/4 windows needs some work). It'll take a couple few hrs to complete the interior tub too. Then it will be fairly standard model building form then on. Seeings as I am using lacquer car paint on it the primer choice was very important, the car paint would literally eat the plastic. It will also need primed inside as well for protection.
I also do some model planes (aside from my RC ones), mostly in 1/32 scale. I at one time had a collection of over 100 1/32 scale kits, I sold most of them. Still have the ones I started and a few I haven't yet. I tend to add alot of detail to mine rather than just build the basic kit, my Me 163 has a 80% scratch built cockpit (no it's not done, lol). I mostly work on them in the winter, I will work on one til I get burn't out or hit a "How do I want to do that". Work on another one for awhile, ETC, ETC.
I started the F 150 bout 6 years ago, the ME 163 9 years ago. There are about 20 others in process, lol. I do it mostly for relaxation so I don't ever make it a "I have to get this done". I will likely have the Uni done before spring though, I want a 1/25 replica of mine as it will be on the shelf - inspiration.

Former model builder here. I moved into model trains instead. More to choose from, more detail stuff available, and you can actually run them when you're done. :) But I built quite a few vehicle kits in my day. I was doing the auto paint thing (so much better than kit paint), bare metal foil on all the chrome moldings and so on. It is a relaxing hobby, also less costly and space consuming vs the real thing. Be sure to post photos of your finished ones.

I haven't built one since I was maybe 16 or 17...I've spent most of my playtime playing with the 1:1 models instead.
Nowdays I don't have the patience for models, I buy Ertl stuff. :P

Here is the last one I actually completed. It was a Dukes' car & came with the stickers-n-stuff, but I left those off. It's designed with NASCAR type underpinnings, which I thought was cool, that's the main reason why I didn't make it a General Lee. The only custom things beside the teenager style  suspension paint I did was to tint the rear window & use a hot razor blade to cut the trunk lid open, so it would show off the fuel cell.

This car is a little larger than the usual 1:1/18 size Ertl models. I'd say it's in the 1:1/16 range.
I wanted to paint trim around the windows, but I knew I would just screw it up, so I left it alone.

That thing would look so much better with a paint job. As for the trim, I use a product called Bare Metal Foil. It's a very thin, adhesive backed foil product that comes on a sheet. Cut it with a razor blade, peel and stick, then trim to fit with the blade. Burnish with a Q-tip and you're done! No paint brush mistakes!

Interesting aside...I have the MPC General Lee (still) that I built. I was very friendly with my local hobby shop and they used to display some of my models in the store window as incentive to others. My General Lee sold dozens of kits, according to the store owner. :D Too bad it was WAY wrong (the kit) with the Charger 500 rear window, but few people ever realized it. It's one of the few kits I kept when I sold off most of my stock.

Thanks Chris!
BTW the E cab is actually about 10 pieces, lol - the frame is 4 (made from 2, I made the under cab floor section correct for the E cab too). There basic body is 4 pieces with a few from sheet plastic around the 1/4 windows, the roof had to be filled and sanded alot to get rid of the ridge from the 2 sections, bed is 2 pieces, filled & sanded. I also removed the mouldings from the model because I removed them from the full size. I have one of the other grills that I opened up the back of too, the one that is in there is just for fitting the hood.
DV, I use bare metal foil too, on the cars/trucks and on the planes. I also use it with the adhesive that Micro Scale makes for it. I also have an aluminum powder product that is burnished on & cleared SNJ Spray Metal, use over a gloss silver to get even up to a polished aluminum finish.. I built a 1/32 Russian MiG 21 in demonstration team colors and used the SNJ over gray primer to replicate the dull bare finish on the lower 1/2 of their Aerobatic team planes, that model took a 3rd place in a regional contest back in 97.

Maybe I'll have to try a paint job & some of that bare metal foil one of these days. I've noticed that the last few times I've handled that Charger, that something new falls off. I guess the glue wasn't designed to last 30 years, huh?
I might have to do a rotisserie restoration on it here in a few more years. :P

I use several adhesives depending on what the parts are,
Tenax 7, it actually welds the plastic together applied sparingly with a very small brush.
Super glue, thick & thin depending
There is another liquid glue for clear parts
5 minute Epoxy

For windows use a product called Micro Kristal Klear, it's a model railroad product that will dry clear. You can actually use it to make windows or lenses in smaller openings (I use it to make windows in my N scale cabooses).

Here's an AMT '49 Merc I've had for a looooong time. I've never been able to find the time to finish it up, so here it is in the mock-up stage.

Image

And an AMT '68 Shelby GT500 that I finished very poorly as a kid. I got a little heavy-handed with the spraypaint, then tried to remove it by sanding and ended up removing a lot of the details. So I moved on to an attempted kit-bash with a Revell Super Stallion Mustang (supercharged alcohol-burning 5.4L). I'm aiming for a Foose-like restomod treatment. I've also modified the doors so that they can open. I'll need to build some hinges at some point:

Image

The 427 SOHC from the Shelby kit will be saved for another project. I've also got an unbuilt '53 F-100 kit.

When I was a teenager (20 yrs ago) I built a ton of models. I need to take the time to get back into it. I hope my folks haven't tossed my old models and pine wood derby cars.

I bought this one http://s269.photobucket.com/albums/jj59 ... del011.jpg when I still had my ranch wagon. I need to get at it. LOL

well i just bought the first one. 10 dollars for the truck and shipping. couldnt resist. I have some models at home and little toys cars and such. My level of model building is nothing like yours on here but I just like to mess around. Ill take pics of it sometime but doubt youll be impressed. Half the time I dont even put most most of the parts on. My girl likes to do puzzles so Ill do the models if I have some down time and my patience isnt too high so I complete them in a day. By that time I have glue eveywhere, paint everywhere (with a few spills) and then there is spray paint somewhere on concrete outside which the lady then curses at me for doing.
Girls love a pick-up man.

Thanks! Unfortunately I don't have much time to work on them.

The '49 Merc is just a later AMT kit that's cast in grey. The earlier ones were cast in white (like the Shelby) or beige. A lot of the AMT kits are just reissues of ones that were originally tooled in the 60's and 70's. I like 'em.
