Post by Slick Fan »

But at least it didn't hurt & it was a cheap bump...I mean DENT (I'll get this lingo yet, you watch)! :D With two dead slicks & no other truck, I was Jonesin' for a truck. My Kid's Blazer just wasn't cuttin' it either, so I decided I just need a cheap truck that drives!
For the price, I would have been an idiot to let it get away...

$450 & it runs great! It's a little rusty & has the worst leaking brake booster I've ever heard, but for the money, you can't beat it.
It's a '76 F250 390, 4-speed camper special. Get this...the door on the bed tool box even works! It's got dual tanks that work too  , but it's gonna need a new driver's door panel, seat recovered & a few odds-n-ends.
The cool thing is that I've still got the parts truck my son bought for disc brakes, p/s & stuff for his '65, so I don't have to go very far for some stuff. :D

Hate to disappoint ya but that's not a bumpside, it's a dent side.

Looks pretty good but I hate all the plastic interior parts they put in them after '73.

That's a piece of plywood I've had from my two previous oil leakers. :P Just a feeble effort to save the driveway.
It does leak a little, but only a small one not a gusher, which I'm glad for. :D

the good thing is that parts are cheap and plentiful for them too. have fun with it!

Good grab!

I just shook hands on 2 66 Custom Cabs, one long, 352/auto, all the interior trim pieces, factory radio, runs but smokes. Floors have a few holes, but still paint covered, no other rust that I saw. Nice truck. Might clean this one up for Joshua.

The other one is short, factory toolbox, no engine, good bed (which is all I really looked at). It's mostly primer. $500 each.

Now I need to clear some room.

just before I bought my '62, in fact the very day I bought it, I went and looked at a mid 70s F250 camper special that was almost EXACTLY like that one. it was brown, but it had a 390, both tanks worked, bed box worked, 4 on the floor, etc.

the guy wanted $500 for it, but oinklette insisted that it looked at her car funny and was a mean truck. so, off we went to go look at the '62, and the rest is history.

several months later I noticed it was still for sale out there, heck for all I know it might still be.

My first truck was a 75 supercab! Had a 300 auto, I used to brake jack it in the school parking lot back in 78 and 79! They used to call it the "Rail Dragster".

Nice truck!

I've had a couple Dana 44 front ends in the past...

...bought each of those trucks with dead engines. The red '77 Highboy had a 460/C6 with a rod through the block. I snagged a beat up Grand Marquis with a decent 460, freshened up the engine & ran it for a couple years.

The silver '77 on the trailer has a slipped timing chain & weak oil pump. I got it for $200 & flipped it a week later for $1200 to some Mexicans who drove ot to California.

The brown '77 Hiboy was the nicest of the three...not a squeak or rattle on it, bought it from the original owner for $800.
It had a small indegestion problem  ...

Image

...but it ran much better after I threw some money at it.

Image

I sold all three of those trucks, a motorcycle & a left nut to be able to buy our house. I miss those Highboys. :(

The year after we bought the house, money got real tight & I sold my '78 Bronco Ranger XLT 4-speed to make two stinkin' house payments.

This was the day I brought it home, check out how clean that body is!

Image
Image

I bought it for $600, with a running, yet very tired engine. A fresh set of bearings, oil pump & valve job later, it ran great! I also recovered the seat, it was nasty.

I miss that one the most, even if it was brown. :( The thing that sucks the most is that I saw it a couple years later. The guy had swapped an automatic into it & the body was getting beat up...AN AUTOMATIC??? Geez. :?

Ok, enough of memory lane, I'm depressing myself. On the bright side however, I do still have the house & I'm not homeless. :)

Congrats! That looks like a pretty decent truck! I have had 2 74s, I liked those trucks. One was a dark metalic blue F100 2wd 390 lwb 3 on the tree. The other one was a Green (mostly primer though, lol) F 150 lwb 4x4 400m auto with a 4" lift and 33s. I wish I still had the 2wd it was a nice truck, it had a fresh rebuild on the engine when I bought it. I know where there is a nice bump here in Bellevue but I am stuck on another Slick for my truck.

Dents for me are a bittersweet thing. on the scale of my best and worst vehicles you will find a dent on both extreme ends

<Worst
----------------------------------------------------------------------Best>
'79 shorty 4x4.............................................................78 f100 Custom
351M gas hog ............................................................plain jane 302 C4
2bbl carb gutless pig............................................20 Mpg hwy consitently
ate brakes like M&M's...............................................ran it for 12 years
sold it after less than a year.........................................cost me a battery
cost me over $2000.................................................... and front brake
to own for that time..................................................... pads

I guess if you can avoid 360's or 351M's in them they are good dependable vehicles. Comfortable to drive, too. Never too stylish tho. :D

I prefer the style of Slicks over bumps-n-dents too...however, I prefer bumps-n-dents styling over 90% of the Chebby's & Dodges of the era. I like the highboys bestest. :D

The two main things I dislike about dents is (agreeing with ABA's thought earlier), the plastic interior (mainly the door panels) & the rear wheel well braces/sand traps that always rust out the wheel wells. My truck's got it bad. I'm thinkin' of trying my hand at some patch panels there this summer. :)

Yesterday, I unbolted the master cylinder & brake booster. The PO had put big gobs of silicone where the m.c. bolted to the booster...that told me it was probably a leaker & that was his bandage. No wonder the booster was bad, there was at least a PINT of brake fluid in there!
So I swiped the one from the parts truck...removed the check valve, flipped it over...and about 1/2 pint drained from that one. :( So much for my grand plan of a freebie brake booster. :P

wow, im on that too
had 2 dents a, 79 f150 swb 4x4 with boat anchor 351M must be the same POS you had, but was better after i put in a 429, at least i got my money back out of it.
and a 73 f100, had a 302,3 on tree,i rebuilt heads twice after valves were square, @ 200K and 375K, bought it back after selling and drove until clutch exploded, sold to a friend who fixed and got another 100K out of it.
this is the truck we took on a trip to Canada and passed thru the stinky town of Marathon.

would never own another 351M/400 but never had any 360 issues at all.

JC, I had a 78 with the 351 M gutless pig is being nice.

A friend had a nearly identical PU with the 400CI version in 79, night and day difference. both of them 2 barrels.

I put a 4 barrel intake and manifold on a 351 M several years ago, really made a difference.
