My 66 had that same transmission cooler setup - had! Turned out that cooler had a leak at one of the fittings; coolant was spraying out once the engine warmed up. It took a while to figure out where that little sucker was; I kept finding little puddles and drips of coolant in different places on the floor in the general vicinity of the cooler/hoses/tubes. Not an easy spot to work on!
About the same time, I ended up having to replace the old radiator with a new one (gonna cost more to clean and fix all the problems with old rad than was to pay for a new one). New radiator also came with an AFT cooler in the bottom. Made up a couple of ATF cooling lines with fittings and unions, added a bracket on the frame crossmember to clamp and support the lines, and used short length of hose to transition to the transmission fittings. Problem solved!
I figure by adding some more ATF (in the lines and the larger radiator trans cooler) to the system it should help it keep the ATF temp down. Of course it also simplified that mess of water hoses/lines/fittings on the engine/radiator cooling system too .
