1964 Mercury Short Flare

Post by Hoofbeat Racer »

Future shop truck of "Second Shift Speed Shop" My fictional hot rod company inspired by fellow slicksters and in particular, the members of the "second shift"

Some of you know I have been flirting with this truck for a few years now. Made it official with title in hand today and brought it home. Won't be starting any serious work on it for awhile but the plan is to slam it down and keep it under budget. I seem to have trouble with the latter. This will never see paint, just might lose the pink primer for a different color. Truck was purchased from the original owner and has 71000 miles on it. Been sitting since 1995 and it fired up with no major issues as soon as I turned the key. No major body issues. Core support is rotten and so is passenger front cab mount but other than that, it is in decent shape for a 48 year old truck. Has a few goofy things done to it that will be coming off right away (anyone want the trumpets? LOL). Anyway, enjoy the pics. My Slickitis is contagious so be aware.

Pat, I am tossing some ideas around for the 223. No plans really yet. You gotta remember half the reason I bought this was to tease Ezer.... I know how bad he wants a short 64. the fact this is a Mercury makes it even more bittersweet

Mark: You have a REALLY nice 2WD....now what you need is a wicked 4WD:)........you should trade the SWB 1/2T for my M-350, it already has a 5:14 Dana out back.....add a dana up front & a transfer case, and you could have a bulletproof 4x4!!.....and I could have an "in da weeds" 2WD without having to do a frame swap:)

If you are not in a hurry we can kick around some ideas for the doors and possibly paint an old weathered logo on them at Slickstock 6....

Mark, I like that truck and the fact it is a Merc is even cooler.
Looks like it is missing some steps off the bed. Well.....I know where
a pair of those are if you are interested. Right here in Okla )( homa.
Rear fenders look like they might straighten out with some hammer and
dolly work. Guessing by the insides it used to be all green.
Not a bad color for a shop truck. Maybe some 320 or 400 grit paper
and water on that "Pink" will show up green underneath it.
Good score Bro!

Yes they do....and that is why I hate him. :cussing:

Mark, you should pep up that 223 and put a T-5 in. Crown vic IFS and an axle flip would make one sweet ride!

Nice! I'd be inclined to re-shoot the cab in the same green colour. A nice low-buck single stage satin?

Dang nice truck Mark. That carpet is a hit! I made a deal on a '64 CC grille @ Slickstock if you're inclined...

Apparently the carpet is a bigger hit than I thought. I best be making sure that the mice don't be moving in over the winter and make a mess. Thanks for the comments guys and to all that I have been contacting trying to get this project rolling. I am like a kid in a candy store with this new slick, it is really going to be a fun project. And its gonna be low...

Looking at a few different options Jason. What I can say at this point is that it will retain leafs and a straight axle. I hope I can free up the garage space to play around this winter. It is a runner right now and kinda have to keep it that way. Hopefully I can at least sand it down before winter comes, the pink primer is killing me.

Mark. That primer is killing me too. It's so loud I can hear it screaming all the way down here in Texas. 8)
