Hey Guys,
I am new here, just trying to get my 66 "patience" up and running to be my daily driver. My father in law and i picked this truck up for 400 about a year ago and it had the 235 in it. She ran great but i could not take her on the highway. So we picked up another 65 with a 352 but a torn up body and did the swap.
Everything went smooth as silk. (reletively speaking that is.) Now we have her in and she is running, but having difficulties keeping her at idle when she warms up she dies out. Also, i have a motor surge, sounds like it runs good while accelerating but when running a higher rpm she lurches and surges on me.
Any ideas how to fix this.

Hmmmmm..............Let me see here. Why dont you just increase the idle screw! That would keep it from dying on you. I would 'opt for a good tuneup then see how it does. BTW

Re: Motor Surging and will not idle
Just in case anyone has similar issues. I replaced the fuel pump and filters. That didnt help. Replaced the distributer and wires. That didnt help. Ended up relacing alternator. (Not directly related).
What did help.... I rebuilt the carb.... which was surprisingly easy. The kit only cost me about $45 and it solved all of my probs.. Now i have an extra fuel pump and an extra Distributer should i ever need them.

Here's a little "trick" I learned from an older mechanic....
When a carb isn't working satisfactory....
Get the engine running & pull the choke closed for a few seconds
Then open it back up.... Repeat a couple of times
Will "suck" all the loose crap out of ports and jets
Sometimes it works, sometimes not
Doesn't cost anything to try

I use that trick several times a year. Works about 50% of the time. When it don't, Sea Foam will usually fix the problem. If not, a carb overhaul is needed.slick4x4 wrote:Here's a little "trick" I learned from an older mechanic....
