Welcome aboard!
Not being able to get reverse with the engine running might be something internal...bent shift fork or something?
It shifts into the forward gears fine?
Having to leave the choke on sounds like you've either got a big vacuum leak, or the carb's just plain dirty & half plugged inside from sitting.

I had a 3 speed in my 66 and after owning it for almost a year I lost reverse and same thing... It was internal damage and pretty much needed to be rebuilt. May need to open it up and inspect it or make sure the linkage is doing it's job and going fully into reverse (even though you said it will when it's not on, at least that is how I read what you put).
As for the carb, it's probably time for a rebuild, gunked up inside, etc.

seems to hit all other gears, there looks like adjustment nut down there by the belhousing, have to read which way to adjust it,......ordered a new fuel pump and carb. rebuild kit pick it up monday. has elec. fuel pump now. its a little holly on there now, this will be the first carb. rebuild i do, going to be a few firsts on this truck,

Cool deal. Yes my truck did the same, only reverse and if I remember correctly I called a few tranny places and asked a couple guys and they said it's interal with the gearing. Said something about a spacer of some sort worn out and its common on the older 3 speeds. I cant remember the correct name for the spacer or nothing since I do not know much about trannies. Someone else here should be able to help you further.
4 speed. Likely a t-98 Borg Warner. Usually a pretty tough tranny.
You are looking for reverse over to the right and UP?
I have a spare t-98 -- they were common -- if you are somewhere in the area, you can have it. I am not sure what shape its in though.
Better still is that the later t-18 and t-19 are bolt up replacements I think.
There are lots of "how to rebuild" t-18 and t-98 trannies out there. Becuase of the super low first year, the jeep guys use them extensively for rock crawlers.
Why did the PO switch to an electric fuel pump? Might indicate other troubles, but I am not a 223 guru.
The old 1bbl carbs are not hard to rebuild. But keep in mind that a worn out throttle shaft that is causing a vacuum leak will give idle trouble and a rebuild kit will not fix that. If the rebuild goes well, but the idle still is trouble, do a search for how to find vacuum leaks.
Were you the fellow over at fordsix.com? If so, glad you found you way here. There are probably a lot more 223s at this site than over there. I like that site a lot, but I have a 240, which is a totally different motor.

Mark.
I know Gunter very well (except there really isn't much to know
).
A little bug fart of a town in North Texas.
You should see it now, times have changed.
Back in the day (early 60's) I had a serious girlfriend from Dallas whose parents owned a little place in Tioga on the east side of the lake. Spent many a nice cool weekend on her parents houseboat there.
We were students at NTSU and had to leave Denton to buy beer (or anything else for that matter).
Tioga was the obvious choice.
Anyway, glad you're part of the family now. Come on home to Texas one of these days.

Mark,
Glad to see you made it over here. Lots of good info & such here.
I posted either yesterday or day before Either here or on the performance 6 forums about the holly carb(boy do I have CRS), so this is kind of redundant. If the throttle shaft bores will allow you wiggle room, you will be wasting your time amd money to try to rebuild it. If you do rebuild it yourself, pay very close attention to all the adjustments and you will do OK. From past experience, I recommend setting the float drop adjustment a little short of what they call for(1/32-1/64). This will eliminate the slug getting cocked of to the side and will eliminate a flooding issue these carbs have. Also, if you can come up with a glass bowl, you will eliminate a seeping/leaking problem that sometimes shows up, the glass bowl wont seep or warp.
If you do need a carb, I will recommend Rod's Carburetor Repair Inc. 2718 W. McDowell #2 in Phoenix. (602)272-4992. When I needed to exchange mine, I got it from them and it has been working good since. If you get one from any of the Checker,Autozone, etc. you are taking a gamble as to whether it will work or not(have heard of people getting as many as four before they got one to work properly).
