Doc: Your post tells me you are not at all what you describe yourself. My heart goes out to you. I prefer my animals (Dogs and Cats) to most people I know, and would do almost anything for them. Losing one is like losing an old friend, who takes you for who you are, and loves you unequivocally, no matter what you do or say. I've had dozens of pets during my almost 65 years and I still cry like a baby when I lose one of them (even the one's who are a PITA) and I'm not ashamed to admit it.Doc Pepper wrote:living with a mean and insensitive old man.

I sit here with tears in my eyes because we just had to do the same thing with our Princsis dog. She has a place of honor above the TV in a nice wood box with her name on it. We have 2 other dogs but she cannot be replaced.
Very well put Gritsngumbo
I've had many well loved pets through the years & have hated to let each one of them go. While it's hard to say goodbye to an old friend, I've always cherished the years of joy, friendship & companionship they have brought. I still have the collar my best buddy used to wear when I had to put her down in 1983...it sits around the shifter boot in my '66.
Do what you need to do, she deserves to be out of pain. Give yourself a month or two to grieve, then go visit the animal shelter & give a youngster a good home & a happy life.

Doc, not alot of things get to me but this did. I am sorry for you and your friend.
I had my red Siberian taken from me along with my Siberian/Wolf hybrid when I split up with my second wife. They put the hybrid one down (they should've put the ex down) not because she was mean, she was 14 years old and starting to show it. I still miss them both and can't get myself to have another dog since. You can tell alot from a picture of a dog, seeing your avatar I can tell she is a wonderful friend, I am sorry.

Doc i feel for ya buddy. This has been a tough post to read for everyone, i know it was for me. Dogs seem to have some human ways about them and one of her's is her love for you and she wouldn't want you to be alone when she is gone. Just like your love for her, you don't want her to be in pain. I would be willing to bet that one of her favorite times was when she chaste off the guy that tried to steal your truck. I would have loved to of seen it myself.

Doc.
You just hit an exposed nerve.
Absolutely not to all of your questions.
You're a lucky person because you've had the company of an animal that loved you absolutely, without reservation and you responded in kind.
Put her down, and know you did it with love and respect, then go get yourself another companion.
Sit with the dog, pet her, and reassure her until she passes.
As a kid, I had the duty to go to the vet and put our dogs down because everyone thought I didn't really care.
What everyone didn't know was that I loved sitting there, holding my dog and knowing they understood I loved them up to their last breath.
Animals do not deserve to suffer without hope any more than people do.
I've never been sorry for that.

We have Dakota in which several members have seen across the country, But before her we had her sister named Bailey, Bailey went everywheres,, never left our spaces at the shows ride in BIG SLICK, Wrecker jump in also, her big job was getting air out of the tarps at the shows that people would watch, even one time at Pate Swap Meet a vendor there rolled his tarp up she started doing that and the guy was amazed at that,, She died 3 years old due to the fact of the fire ant spray used at the Turkey Rod Run and the animal shelter down in Daytona has warned them that the stuff they use can kill not only small pets but small infants as well, nothing was never done but also a lot of vendors also there bigger pets got sick but was no hope for Bailey died 3 days after Christmas
IN Kathy's arms. man we had the vet do eveything possible spent thousands,,, no hope due to fire ant sprayed,, told them in Daytona they said never heard such a thing, well thats bull, Anyway with Dakota she gets wiped off with baby wipes everytime she goes outside the trailer thats why the only time you see her in the trailer is at the 3 Florida shows we do.. Dakota has the same parents as Bailey had we had to track them down in SC., so Doc we feel for you as well as many others here do ALSO,,

Here's a reply written before reading Fred's post
I read this post last night and it brought back memories to me of having to have our family pet put down several years ago. It also brought to mind we will be having to deal with this again in a couple of years.
Its so hard to face the loss of a loved pet.
Guess all I can say is we feel your loss and our thoughts are with you.
Again our thoughts and prayers are with both of y'all in this time of loss

I hope this doesn’t come across to sappy but in the short time I’ve been hanging out around here it’s become obvious that the group of people that also hang out here are a bunch of characters to say the least. But what really makes this place special is the true character you guys show when one of your fellow members is in need of a few friends. Doc, as I started to read your post I fully expected to be amused by your wit unfortunately this time this was not the case, Last night I sat for a while thinking of what to say to you or what I could offer in this most unpleasant time. When I got in this morning and got on line I sat and read what your friends had to say and I’d like to think they have expressed much of what I may have said. The little I can offer is I hope their comments and thoughts offer some solace and hang in there buddy I’m sure you know your doing the right thing.
Fred, very sorry to hear about your loss.
It took hours after reading Doc's post to be able to answer.
I can think of even less to say now.
Best wishes, Greg & Rose

loss of loved ones
After losing loved ones, it always takes a long, long time to feel like anything is normal again. Doc, like you , I recently lost two little buddies of mine who had been with me for 16-17 years. Even though it has almost been a year since the last one passed, it still hurts.
But there are a lot of little buddies out there that need somebody as bad as you need them. They could never take her place, but they will help you get through it. TR
