Disc brake conversion - options for bolt patterns?

Disc brake conversion - options for bolt patterns?

Post by myol66 »

What options do I have for converting my '66 to 4-wheel disc brakes?

Some of the aftermarket kits appear to keep the original bolt pattern, which is 5X5.5 if I remember correctly.

I would like to have options to this for a wider range of wheels.

Any suggestions?

ECI and Speedway both sell different patterns, don't know about others. You will have to do some investigating.

A 66 can be converted in the front with all ford parts from a later model F100 and f150 to 1072 to 1979. If you want a differing pattern the hubs and rotors can be re drilled to the desired pattern.

For the rear you will need to be creative. I will be making my own brackets and using later front rotors from a 90s pickup along with GM calipers with integral E brake as i will be using stock 5 on 5.5 steel wheels in 17" size.. Speedway sells just the brackets for GM calipers. If you go with an after market kit like Wilwood or USB your axles will need to be re drilled to the smaller pattern or order custom axles with the correct pattern of choice.

1980-83 Ford made a light duty F100 that used a 4 1/2" bolt pattern. The rotors use the same bearings and seals as the 73-79 F150 rotors that everyone uses. I don't know FOR SURe that they will interchange but might be an option for you.

All good suggestions.
I know I have some research to do.
I've got some new starting points to consider.
Thanks!

I have been doing research on converting my rear to disc also. Here are a few links that will help. The 2 main problems I have found are the bolt pattern (most kits for sale are 4.5X5 bolt patteren) and the parking break. But there are soultions and calipers that have the parking break built in. Enjoy and keep us updated what you find and use.

Unfortunately the caliper location is different on the older setup I tried this already (couldnt be that easy for us),a bracket set could probably be fabbed, might be a good idea if someone has time to build some, could probably sell a bunch.

How does the rotor diameter and thickness compare on the 4 1/2" setup?

HERE'S My 2cents if you want it :?: , want Ford 9" with rear disc, no problem, 1975-79 Mark V rear end with rear disc, re-drill rear axles,, keep the factory welded hand brake bracket that came on it for for your factory hand cable to hook into the emergeny brake system shave all the extra lincoln suspension junk off it,, before pulling your rear out get the pinion angle, then take the saddles off your old one or new ones, set the pinion angle as the old was, sometimes change yoke depends on driveshaft, then if you want to keep the same 2:23/2:50 gears or change with something else since those Lincolns had some tall gears, also that rear is the same as Full size Mercury's or Fords in that era ,, the bolt pattern is 5 on 5 in that era which is same a full size GM , NOT SURE On a GM Bolt Pattern, look at the wheel studs, 1/2 stud is big GM Bolt Pattern,, 7/16 is small bolt pattern when I do a truck thats what I run been doing to those rears since 1980's with 4 wheel disc.. also make sure you get the proportional valve off the Lincoln have used it with straight axle trucks, camaro sub-frame trucks, and twin-i-beam trucks with single master cylinder, dual non-power and power setups
