First drive

Post by ELpolacko »

You saw us fire the engine, now you can see it move for the first time.

This poor truck has been through hell. I built the chassis for this three + years ago then it spent the last year at a very high profile body shop where thier roof colapsed under heavy rain. This of course fell on top of the truck and flattened the roof making a perfect funnel and filling the Ford Racing 514 full of water.

It's been a long time comming, enjoy it's very first ever drive under it's own power since the project started.

FYI I do have the original grille but it looks like it got run over by a steamroller, manhandeled by GodZilla and straightened back out by a one eyed hillbilly with a sledgehammer. This is all I could find on short notice.

I really wish I had before pictures of this disasterpiece. Trust me on this, this truck was only good for a parts truck. Even though Garbz thought it was decent because the torque box and bed floor were not rusted through.

After we got done pinstriping my driveway we had to push the truck back inside. The clutch wouldn't disengage so we pulled it apart and foung this!

I'm doing the research right now for a nice Centerforce clutch.

Bummer, no Centerforce. Looks as if we need the Street Twin system from McLeod.

Ya gotta love a truck that makes the subwoofer work! I take it the dog in the video has been around a lot of serious cars- he didn't seem too impressed.

That's my boy, Wood. He grew up in the shop with us banging on stuff, blowing up mufflers, catastrophic press failures and other such noise.

I just think he was bummed that I didn't take him for a ride...

Very cool ELP, mine is the same truck, but no big back window. Same color even. On the clutch, was it new? If so, was it broken in? I've run Centerforce in all my cars and love their dual friction. Not cheap, but as you know, without a good clutch, it don't matter how much power you're making.
Tell us about the suspension mods.

The clutch was a McLeod. I talked with them yesterday about this, calculated the gearing and tires we are running the clutch was only good enough for 450 ft/lbs. We liqified the binder agent and the friction material ejected through the sides. The flywheel side looks fine though.

We ordered a McLeod Street Twin clutch and flywheel and should have it late next week for round two.

Interestingly enough yes this was a new clutch, and I have heard about proper brake in. We do the same thing with brake pads but call it beding them in. I had asked the tech at McLeod about this and the stuff we had would have liquified anyway. Bedding the clutch tempers the friction material and makes it last longer.

I went through some of the same stuff on the clutch in my truck. I had a 10,000 RPM brand clutch with a 14 pound steel flywheel and lightned pressure plate. I did all the same procedures with it and was able to fry it much the same way. When you produce over 600 ft/lbs of torque at the crank, standard clutches, even racing clutches just can't hang on.

This particular truck has one of my Dakota kits on it, stock (rebuilt) rear leafs, Currie 9" with Explorer brakes. I fabricated a tubular 6 pointed crossmember and boxed sections front and rear.

I will put up some more pictures soon of some of the details.

Sounds great Steve. Yeah, that's a lot of torque for a steeter. I was just curious if the clutch was new or not. Looking forward to more pics. 8)
