I shoot a lot of my hot rod shots using HDR, or tone mapping software....Love the look and makes the images pop...

That is wild, especially when you enlarge it and start to see the bushes or weeds in the orange sand. Amazing how bland and boring it seems on a first pass and then you find out what it is and study it a little on full screen and wow, you gain a whole new respect for the perspective that was captured.

Great job on the composition of these two, Cory.

I like the leading lines of the dirt path in the first one, and the out-of-focus fence post in the lower right of the second one is a very interesting touch. I tend to enjoy taking photos of weathered wood and barbed wire fences too.

Thanks for the comments, I'm learning a little at a time and having a blast while learning. The out of focus fence post took a minute because it kept wanting to focus on the post.

You think with all this intelligence the camera would know exactly what I want!

Yes, autofocus tends to like homing in on strong vertical lines like that, I find. Or whatever's closest. Been there done that!

You may be able to set the autofocus point in-camera, though. Pretty sure I can set mine to only focus on objects in the centre of the frame.

This one you just push the button down partially and it will select items and each time you push it partially it moves to a new item until it's focused on what you want and then you shoot. It probably does have a center focus setting but my focal point varies all the time so I'll keep arguing with it until it sees the beautiful things I see the same way I see them.

I have that option too (where I can manually scroll through the focus points), but find centre focus to be much more versatile.

For example, say you wanted the near fencepost to be sharp instead of the buildings, but didn't want the post in the centre of the frame. You'd aim directly at the post, focus on it, lock the focus by keeping the shutter button partially depressed, then recompose so that the post is in the bottom right corner of the frame, as you've done. In that instance the post should stay sharp even though the buildings would be in the centre of the shot.

Not that there's anything wrong with the settings you're using. Just something to consider if you find yourself battling the camera and getting frustrated.

Thanks Jason, I am certainly paying all the attention I can as I learn and progress and banking the ideas and knowledge.

I sent off my first HDR photos for print today along with another photo I wanted printed. I use a guy out of Truth or Consequences NM "Photo Art Imaging". Great guy, he's called me on the phone to make sure he had the information he needed and we talked for an hour. He's enlarged multiple photos for me including some on canvas and every single one has been top notch excellent for what I consider a reasonable price.

I also went for a little drive and found a really good photo shoot location for cars/trucks. I wanted an old industrial park look where I could find some water on the ground etc after a rain with old buildings for the backdrop and living near small town Idaho I didn't have a lot of hope but I found what I was looking for, now I need to catch the owners and make sure they are OK with it so they don't see me there set up and think I'm up to no good.

Here's a few more I took this morning, the bridge is the one here by the house, the little hotel photo is an old building in town that my dads cousin is restoring the rest are on the little Greenway along the river in town.

Hey Cory, I found your bridge on google earth. Haven't found your house yet, google earth doesn't have very good resolution but I'm thinking about trying their new satalite plugin.

If you found the bridge you found the house, I own 8 acres from the S.E. corner of the bridge, there is a circle drive that goes down from right to left and around the house.

Ok got you located. I am sure I could drive right to your front door now. Looks as if there are a few RV Camp grounds around your area. Starting to plan a trip your way some time this year. We haven't been to the Tetons yet. Did Yellowstone a few years ago.

Figured I'd best post one of my own HDR photos!

I used mild HDR for this image in order to lighten up the shadows (to show details in the tire treads, for instance) without blowing out the sky. It`s a very reflective black, so it was a bit of a challenge to shoot.

PS - Please forgive the Brand X content. In it's defense it's very quick, very torque, and is sitting at about 10 pounds per horsepower...

Took an afternoon drive Saturday and here's a few more pictures I shot this weekend. If you guys get sick of me posting pictures let me know, I love this stuff so I do it a lot.

Upper Mesa Falls on the Henry's Fork just North of my place.

Lower Mesa Falls a short distance below Upper Mesa.

A spring near Upper Mesa Falls.

Pretty easy to tell I spend a lot of my time on the Henry's Fork casting flies to the elusive Rainbow Trout, I know almost every inch of this river.
