i always thought that was a terrible look with the slits, should be covered up with a metal grille.
not picking on your truck, i have some like that too.

Well fellas,
'HERE'S ANOTHER VERSION:
My '65 F250, has an uncut, non-radio dash (smooth from the ash tray to the gage cluster panel),
yet on the top of the non-padded dash it still has the slits without screw holes or grille cover... GO FIGURE... :?: :?:

Slick Fan,
Obviously from your pics, your '65 was a custom cab - yet DIDN'T get a padded dash. So that provides just more evidence that in '65, you could get a Custom Cab WITHOUT a padded dash...

Iceman,

 Looks like I'll need to crawl under my Slick's dash with a flashlight and look for some tell-tale cutting & welding scars....

.......report to follow.

First year fed mandated pad.....1966 optional on preceding years.

All 65 dashes have the speaker slits in the dash as do all 66 dashes.

61 to 64 have what ever hole the dealer chewed out of the top of the dash as radios were a dealer installed option. Grill and speaker & antenna came with the radio.

ha, the tach on the column works better in the straight axle trucks.... that's not so good

I think the guages on the column drop wouldnt be too much more trouble than the tach. Lookin thru the wheel for the speedo and all anyway. Looks like both ways would be the best/only decent way on their respective models.

Haha either the slots or the grille plate on the dash look better than the dash in Poor Aggie. Some dickweed made a hatchet-hole up there and I got it covered up with a rotten plastic speaker grate till I can patch it.

It just hit me when I was reading about ideas for putting the radio somewhere else, Somebody, Likely me eventually, could make a swing-down mechanism for the radio, that hides it behind the dash then you could push up on it to "unlatch it" and it swings down under the dash... that would be SLICK!!!

Report in: My dash looks to be a true uncut piece, based on my inspection from under & behind.

Good info (as usual), Garbz!
Thanks!

one of my first trucks i ever owned had the cd player jacked out of it. never had a key to the doors so i couldnt lock it up. so i installed my new cd player in the glovebox. it was kinda a pain getting to unless i had a passenger, then they got to play disck jockey. the stereo in my car i have now has a little remote. i dont know why a person needs a remote in a car but it sure woulda been handy to have back then

check out this F350 radio and speaker. the speaker had a removealbe grill. i will get a better pic of this. but it wasnt chewed out. i thought it was formed from the factory. i will get a better pic.

Well, if what Garbz said is true (which it sounds entirely feasable to me), then the factory accessory radio kit would have probably had a stencil type pattern marking where to cut the holes in the dash. There was probably Rotunda specialty tools available too, to make it a clean install.
In the end, it would look factory, as long as the installer cared about his work. :)

Another reason why I buy Garbz' dealer option idea, would explain why some antennas are installed in odd areas of the cowl, with a factory radio in the dash...the installer just didn't read that far into the instructions.
Or there were two installers, one doing the dash work & one doing the antenna, for the sake of speed...you know, the salesman probably told the customer "no problem, we can have a radio in your new truck in 20 minutes!" BAM, two guys go into overdrive to get that sucker installed quick.

i have to agree with that.
there is a lot of special tools for both the factory and dealers, i made a bunch in my shop days.
remember too all procedures are given a time limit, so either the mechanic makes the time and gets paid for the listed amount or does not and eats the extra he used.
theory is of you have all the required special tools the job can be completed in the alotted time or less.
the variable is of course the experience and attitude of the one doing the job.

From the collection of pics provided by 'Fordman' above,
check out the interesting way some guy may have "covered up" the radio knobs/dial holes on the front of the dash....
...and I think it doesn't look too bad at that: (magnify the pic for a good look)

cant really tell from the pics but i would say its just the 68-72 controls which would work for the 65/66 heater.
