Another New Guy

Hello – I’m brand new to the group and I just got my truck a couple of days ago. I had a 62 slick when I was in high school and I made a lot of great memories with that truck. I also learned a lot about working on cars keeping my truck going. Now I’m 56 and my brother called me from Oregon last week saying he found a truck like mine for sale and he wanted to know if I was interested. After a lot of research and talking with the wife, we decided to get it. It’s pretty much stock and it’s a custom cab, camper special, and a Ranger (I think all that’s true). But, it’s got a lot of rust. There aren’t any rust holes, just a lot of rust.

It runs really well. Even though it was sitting for a couple of years, my brother drove it from southern Oregon to Sacramento and I drove it home to Reno over the mountain.

So I have a few questions and I hope you guys can help me out.

Originally, the interior was all red. The seats, carpet, tank cover, visors, headliner and upper dash were redone in black. The carpet is really dirty, but it looks okay otherwise. The seats will have to be recovered again.

My questions:

1. It’s a legit Ranger?

2. What’s the origin of the name, “slick?” Was it coined by this group?

3. What’s the button above the ignition key hole for? Windshield washer?

4. You can see from the pics that one of the auxiliary tanks has been open to the elements for a long time. It’s probably rusted inside. Is it still usable?

5. The turn signal arm is really loose and falls down into left turn mode just from driving down the road. Are the turn signal mechanism parts available anywhere?

6. I would love to get stock wheels and hub caps. Available?

7. What kind of differential do I have? Why are the "9 inch" diffs so popular?

Thanks. I found this group when I was trying to decide if I should buy the truck and I read a lot of your posts. It really helped me make an informed decision.

3. yes washer squirter, if it's still hooked up and the squirter motor works.

4. Probably not. likely has rust, dirt, water in it. You might be able to salvage it if you need to. repair and seal the inside. Or find a replacement from someone.

5. yes, I believe most of the big parts places carry the parts. look at these places: http://fordtruk.com/links.html A good parts store may have some of the more common wear items, not sure if this is one of those.

6. yes and yes. New wheels at places like Stockton Wheel and wheel vintiques, used at junkyards, craigslist maybe. hubcaps at the Ford truck vendors. Might find some of your parts in the classifieds on here as well.

Yes, your truck is an Ranger.

The V81 in the VIN code denotes a Ranger interior with red seats

from a fellow Reno resident! I think we are the only 2 members from Reno. If there are others I haven't met them yet. Do you plan to have her ready to for Hot August Nights next year? I see some Slicks on the Reno roads every once in a while, but always in passing and I don't get the chance to tell em about the site here. I have been hanging around this site for a couple years now, but I have not even the slightest bit of knowledge compared to a great deal of other people on here. I don't contribute as much as I should because I don't have all the answers, but I sure am learning a lot!
