new guy with a '65 f100

hey all,
i just picked up a 65 ford f100 with a straight 6. 300 ci engine.
i bought it from a friend who had sold it to a friend years ago. the friend rebuilt the engine, and the carb crapped out on him so he sold it back to my friend.

ive never had a ford with a straight 6 before so any suggestions on this carb would be great.

Same carb i have on my 300 . You can rebuild it or buy a replacement at advance auto part for about $170.00. Buy rebuild kit from DENNIS CARPENTER.

Concerning the carb- I purchased a reman. by Autoline about 6 years ago- for my 300 ,have not has a problem yet,
I just checked RockAuto Parts website and the have them for $113 exchange, I work at Advance Auto Parts and they sell the same carb for $229 exchange- enough said on that one.
if you rebuilding it they are not to bad to do - check for excessive wear and play at the throttle butterfly shaft and base.
Also note the size and location of all the check balls- if they get mixed up it will not run right.

Almost forgot- part number C814- you will not find it listed under 65/66 f100, original 1965/6 Ford part number crosses over to a 1968 F100 300 cid

On a rebuild kit like mentioned one from D Carpenter or MAC's- there kits include the power/spark valve where most others do not(Advance Auto) you have to buy it separate and the last time I check they were not available anymore.

Welcome! I have that same carb on my 223 inline six in my 64. Easy to rebuild. I bought my kit from NAPA auto parts. be sure to get a fuel filter too. and or first run a separate fuel source to it so you know it's not a fuel line or tank problem. easier in the long run.

brians1966 thanks for the tip. that is the best price around! thanks! im going to see how this rebuild holds up before dropping a chunk of change on something i might be able to hold off on.

yesterday i bought a rebuild kit, rebuilt the carb, recharged the battery. today i reinstalled the carb and batt, now all i need to do is start it up! which would be much easier if i had a key. my friend still has yet to get me the key so im doing what i can until it arrives.

one thing i know i need is a passenger window. some drunk broke it out.

some time ago the truck was converted to a floor shift transmission. no major rust, a large dent in the right fender which i'll have a friend bang out for me. fairly new tires.

Biff Tirkle was a joke redneck name me and some friends came up with when we were kids. ive since started using it as a forum nickname.

im pretty excited about this truck, i had originally started looking for a 70's f150 for beating up a few times a month around the house. then this truck came my way and i couldnt pass it up.


can anyone recommend a good shop manual, or a place to get one without loosing my first born?

Ebay is probably your best bet to find shop manuals but be prepared to pay- sometimes you'll get lucky and find a inexpensive volume- thats how I found mine- 1 at a time- still need one volume though'
Also check out www.FORDification.com this site is mainly 68 and up F100 but alot of the info covers the Slicks, also check out the tech section of our site- alot of good info there to.

today a local junk yard had a 65 f100 i went and pulled the passenger side window and carb off of. might go back and pull the right fender which is much less dented than the fender that is on it now.

theres a swap meet coming up i'll be on the lookout for manuals.

I dont need a slick manual. I have slick60s.com.

The carb you have is a "load o matic" type carb. It is hooked to a "load o matic" type distributor. Why I am telling you this is that you can't use a regular centrifugal/ vacuum advance type distributor with that carburetor, and if you switch to a carburetor without the spark valve on it, your distributor advance will not work right.

The good news is that you can drop in a later model distributor if you want ( even with electronic ignition) without having to do anything besides get a later model carb.

Read past the part that says sold.
Make sure you have a a 1965 and not a sixty six built in 65.(This is why I had the 65 manuals)
Post your vin number and somebody will look it up for you.

someone on here, i forgot who sent me an email with a link to an ebay listing for a set of 3 manuals. i bid and won 35 bucks for the set.

i hadnt checked this thread in a while and of course now i read your post about making sure my vin matches the year.

from what i could find, this truck is

f100 2wd - true
had/has a 240 ci
assembled in Norfolk VA (which is funny because i am not 2 hours from Norfolk)


i still cant find production year. seems like finding a vin decoding chart for this truck is more difficult than it ought to be.

i also posted a pic of the engine #'s, from what i can determine this is a 300ci engine. which would make sense. someone did a trans and engine swap.

sooooo.... any help identifying which year this truck was made and confirming which engine i have would be much appreciated.

Biff if the 3 book set you bought is the service manuals. The first book of the three should have a complete vin breakdown with production #s listed. It will have a very complete breakdown about what all numbers on the vin or warranty tag compute to. I did notice that the chrome fender badge on your truck on the drivers side is the one for 66 not much help just something I noticed.
