Another New Guy

I just purchased a 62 F-250 4 X 4 Stepside. The guy I bought it from was kind enough to tell me about you all. I was able to navagate my way here from MSN. Everything looks great. I've already started taking notes! I also have a 55 Fairlane. I've learned most of my restoration lessons on that over the years.
Electrical work is my favorite...I'm getting ready to install a Petronix ignition system and a GM 10SI alternator in the old 4 X 4 this weekend.

Thanks everybody! I'm in South Jersey close to Philly. The MAC thing sounds great! I was checking the website out last night. I posted a pic of my 62 in the album but I can't figure out how to get it onto my post??
As for electrical, I've had good luck thru trial and error; eventually I learned a few things! I spent a few years re-wiring Aircraft in the USAF so by comparison a car or truck is theoretically a little easier. The big difference is that 50 year old transport aircraft are maintained each and every day whereas our 40 to 50 year old automobiles have a "checkered" past! I've found that the Delco 10SI alternator conversion along with a Pertonix ignition is about the best thing you can do to ensure reliability in your starting and charging systems. Of course if you're going for a 100 point resto it won't work since that GM alternator won't cut it with the judges! I've even converted 6 volt cars over to 12 volt with this setup and it's like night and day. A few companies make brackets for installing the Delco unit onto old Y Blocks and you can get the 10 SI at ANY auto parts store. Plus it really cleans up the engine bay since you don't need an external regulator or any of the associated wiring.

nice looking truck. I just installed a 12si alternator in mine last week. this site has a lot of good information on both the 10si and 12si. hope it helps.

Nice Avatar! I bought the same picture at a car show about a year ago. The old couple that was selling them told me a story about the guy who drew them. said he used to race chickens. for some reason he had to sell them, but he kept one that was his favorite. I forgot the chicken's name, but he includes him in every picture he draws. do you have a larger copy? can you find him in the slick?

Thanks Frank, I'll see if I can track down a bigger JPEG of that avatar. Mad Electrical really has good info. There are a few other good sites out there too. Thank God for the internet! I'm planning on putting the 12 SI into my truck (basically an upgraded 10SI with better cooling) but the installation is the same. There's a few places around that carry the y block alternator brackets but I swear by 5th Avenue Garage in Kansas http://www.fifthaveinternetgarage.com/
Their bracket kits fit right and fit every time! I've heard a few horror stories about MAC's but I've never dealt with them so I can't say if their brackets are any good. Also, When I wire it up I eliminate the resistor wire and use the existing "GEN" light as the load to prevent engine run on. It works just as it should, when the alternator is not turning or shorts out, the light comes on. When it's running right, the light is out. Seriously, it's an easy job that looks and sounds difficult, impresses your wife and buddies and makes you feel like a million bucks when you're done!

I was able to use the stock brakets on my 300. i just had to grind them a little for clearance of the larger cooling fan. i also had to drill out the mounting hole on the alternator to 7/16 i think. and i had to make a 1" spacer.

Welcome to the club. Nice looking truck! Nice to have a new member close by- Sinc and I both live in Bucks County PA near Langhorne and Yardley and work in Philly. The MAC guys are a great group always ready to help each other out with the problems associated with these 40-something year old trucks. What part of Southern Jersey are you in? Lots of good car shows and cruise nights around these parts in the warmer weather.

I live in Mount Laurel and work at Ft. Dix. You're right, there are a lot of good shows and cruises in the area. Holman Ford on Rt 73 in Marlton has a "Ford only" show in the fall. We also go to the Merchantville and Mount Holly Cruises in the Summer. I usuallly like to take the old Fairlane out to those since it's got the whole 50's vibe going.
I'd like to meet up with you guys sometime since we're so close. I'm keeping the F-250 restricted to very short trips until I can really go thru it well. It needs a lot of little things. I spent today Replacing the steering wheel, re-wiring the horn circuit, and doing a bit of carb work. My goal is to have it show ready for my 100th birthday!!
